Baseball Set To Defend National Title As #4 Seed At Black College World Series

Pompano Beach, Florida-The road to a second consecutive HBCU National Championship for the Edward Waters baseball squad has been set as the seedings for the 2023 Tyson Foods Black College World Series were made official on Sunday afternoon. The double-elimination tournament will commence Wednesday, May 10th-Saturday, May 12th at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama, home to the Montgomery Biscuits, the Double A Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Purple & Orange will be the #4 seed in the NCAA Division II bracket, and will open tournament play on Wednesday, May 10th at 9:00am in the opening contest of the event against #1 seed Albany State. Joining EWU and Albany State in the other NCAA Division II bracket contest are #2 seed Savannah State and #3 seed and 2021 BCWS champion Bluefield State.

For the Tigers this season, they have had a rough go of it against the Golden Rams of Albany State. ASU swept a three-game series against Edward Waters and outscored EWU 40-15. All-Time in the series against the Golden Rams, Edward Waters does still maintain a 14-12 series lead in a series that goes back to 2007.  The Tigers also still maintain the longest winning streak in the series, winning seven consecutive matchups with Albany State from 2012-2015. However, Albany State has had the better output of the two teams in recent history winning six of the last seven meetings against Edward Waters.

In the NAIA Division bracket, #1 seed Rust College and #4 seed & state rival Florida Memorial will do battle, along with #2 seed Wiley College and #3 seed Paine College, coached by former Edward Waters HBCU National Championship head coach Kerby Marshall.

The two bracket winners will meet in the BCWS Championship Game on May 12th. Last season, the Tigers brought home the title as a #2 seed in the NAIA Bracket, defeating Florida Memorial in the bracket championship game. Then knocking off Kentucky State, 3-2 in the title game to bring home the program's second HBCU National Championship in the modern era history of the program.
