Jacksonville, Fla. – Edward Waters University football opened the 2025 season with a resounding win over Savannah State, and two Tigers have been recognized for their standout performances. The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced today that quarterback Noah Bodden has been named Newcomer of the Week, while cornerback David Law-Mortimer was selected as the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
Bodden Shines in Tiger Debut
Making his first start in the purple and orange, senior transfer quarterback Noah Bodden displayed poise and efficiency under center. He finished the night 18-of-27 passing for 220 yards, tossing two touchdowns through the air, while also adding a rushing score to cap off his three-touchdown performance.
Bodden's command of the offense helped fuel a balanced attack that powered the Tigers to a dominant 41-14 season-opening victory on the road. His recognition marks an early sign of the impact he is expected to bring to the EWU offense this season.
Law-Mortimer Provides Spark on Defense
On the other side of the ball, David Law-Mortimer proved to be a difference-maker for the Tigers' defense. The veteran defensive back finished second on the team with five tackles, but his biggest highlight came in the opening quarter when he scooped up a fumble and raced 54 yards to the end zone for a defensive touchdown.
The momentum-swinging play energized the Tiger sideline and help EWU gain control of the contest. Law-Mortimer's performance reinforced his reputation as a playmaker in the secondary and earned him this week's SIAC Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Tigers Building Momentum
With two SIAC weekly award winners following the opening contest, Edward Waters has set the tone for what promises to be an exciting season under interim head coach Brian Jenkins. The Tigers will look to continue their momentum when they return home for their 2025 home opener on Saturday, September 6, against Miles College at Nathaniel Glover Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN+.
