Lady Tigers Softball Splits Twinbill against Lions in Big Cat Clasic

Miami Gardens, FL., -- The Edward Waters softball team split their Big Cat Classic doubleheader against Florida Memorial on Thursday afternoon.

In the opening games, Kylah Gardner collected three hits in four at bats, as EWU defeated FMU 5-0. Gardner doubled in the fifth inning, singled in the sixth inning, and singled in the fourth inning.

Keivana Durand struck out 10 batters on the day. The hurler also allowed two hits and zero runs over seven innings while walking none.

The Lady Tigers got on the board in the top of the fourth inning after the Lions committed an error, and Klaire Spooner hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Leny Hoyos took the loss for Florida Memorial. The reliever went three and two-thirds innings, surrendering three runs (one earned) on six hits, striking out three and walking three.

Spooner and Gardner each drove in one run for EWU. Laura Scott collected two hits for Edward Waters in four at bats.

Even though EWU collected nine hits to FMU's six, they still fell 6-5 In the second game of the doubleheader. Kylah Gardner and Brooke Rice each collected two hits for the Lady Tigers.

Florida Memorial got on the board in the first inning after Heidy Olivo homered to center field, scoring two runs.

Edward Waters captured the lead, 4-2, in the top of the third when Gardner singled, scoring one run, Rice doubled, scoring two runs, and Hailey Vela singled, scoring one run.

Ciara Justice homered to center field, which helped Florida Memorial tie the game at four in the bottom of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lions went back into the lead after Kayla Jade Morales hit a sacrifice fly, and Aashana Francis singled to left field, each scoring one run.

Gardner hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the seventh for EWU.

Aylssa Estrada earned the win for Florida Memorial as the hurler allowed three hits and one run over four innings, striking out none and walking one.

Riley Kapparis took the loss for EWU. The starter went four innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking one. 

Gardner and Rice were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for the Lady Tigers.

Edward Waters will return to action with a home doubleheader against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Tuesday, March 4 at Fort Famiy Park in Jacksonville, FL
