Jacksonville, Florida-The entire Edward Waters University community is mourning the sudden loss of former Tiger football standout and alumnus, Dexter Gant who passed away early Sunday morning.

A native of Port St. Joe, Florida, Gant was a focal point of the rebirthed Edward Waters football program that came back in 2001 after a 34-year hiatus. Former EWC quarterback Dexter L. Davis and Gant proved to be one of the most lethal combinations in NAIA football over their four years together playing under former head coach Lamonte Massie, ultimately leading the squad to an 8-3 record and the Southeast Atlantic Conference Championship in 2004. In that 2004 season, Gant ranked second in the NAIA in yards per game (99.1) and 20th in receptions per game (5.3). He finished with 58 catches for 966 yards and four touchdowns that season, ultimately being named a 2004 NAIA Football All-American.

Upon his graduation from Edward Waters in 2006 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and Management, Gant went on to start his own transportation business, Dynamic Roadmaster Freight, LLC. A proud member of the Delta Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Gant was a staunch supporter of his alma mater, attending several events, and always lending his help in advancing the football program he helped to build. 

A Candlelight Vigil is planned for Wednesday, November 15th at 7:11pm at the Kappa Alpha Psi plot on campus.
