JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Edward Waters University linebacker Trevon French has been named the SIAC Defensive Player of the Week following his dominant performance in the Tigers' 42-28 victory over rival Florida Memorial University in the 2026 Unity Classic.
French, who entered the 2026 season as the SIAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, wasted little time showing why he earned the conference's preseason recognition.
The standout linebacker delivered a commanding performance in the season opener, recording a game-high 16 total tackles, including four solo tackles and 12 assisted tackles, while also coming up with a key fumble recovery and blocked extra-point attempt.
French's efforts helped anchor an Edward Waters defense that made timely plays throughout the contest as the Tigers overcame a slow start and erupted for 35 points in the second quarter on their way to the 42-28 victory.
The win not only gave Edward Waters its third consecutive 1-0 start to a season but also kept the Tigers unbeaten in Unity Classic games and snapped a three-game losing streak against their rivals from South Florida.
Now, French and the Tigers will turn their attention to their next challenge as Edward Waters hits the road to face NCAA Division I opponent Jackson State University.
The Tigers will travel to Mississippi for the matchup on Saturday, September 5, at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST, and the game will air live on HBCU GO.
