JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —The Edward Waters University football team opened the 2026 season in impressive fashion Saturday night, overcoming a slow start before erupting for 35 points in the second quarter en route to a dominant 42-28 victory over rival Florida Memorial University in the 2026 Unity Classic.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 1-0 for the third consecutive season, remained undefeated in Unity Classic contests, and snapped a three-game losing streak against their rivals from South Florida.
After taking some time to find their rhythm early, the Tigers' offense came alive in the second quarter and took control of the contest. Edward Waters exploded for 35 points during the frame, using a balanced offensive attack and timely defensive plays to seize momentum and build a commanding advantage.
Senior quarterback Tavion Faulk delivered an outstanding performance in his season debut, completing 20-of-30 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Faulk also added a rushing touchdown, accounting for four total touchdowns in the Tigers' season-opening victory.
The Tigers also received a strong performance from All-SIAC running back Johntarrious Thomas, who led all rushers with 54 yards on the ground. Thomas provided one of the night's most electrifying moments when he broke loose for a dazzling 30-yard touchdown run.
In the passing game, Izaiah Jean-Baptiste opened the season in tremendous fashion, hauling in seven receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Fatoma Paulk added three catches for 67 yards and a touchdown, while newcomer Jayden Pressey also found the end zone to contribute to the Tigers' 42-point offensive output.
Defensively, the Tigers were led by All-SIAC linebacker Trevon French, who delivered a dominant all-around performance with a game-high 16 total tackles, a fumble recovery, and a blocked extra-point attempt.
All-SIAC safety Aykenon Rodger added another strong performance with 13 total tackles, while fellow safety D'Juan Grant recorded nine tackles. Linebacker Lemar Harris contributed seven tackles and two pass breakups as the Tiger defense came up with key plays throughout the night. The cornerback tandom of Za'quwon Moss and Amari Birth combined for six pass breakups.
The victory sends Edward Waters into its next challenge with momentum as the Tigers prepare to hit the road for a major matchup against NCAA Division I opponent Jackson State University.
Edward Waters will travel to face the Tigers of Jackson State on Saturday, September 5, at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson, Mississippi. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. EST, with the game set to air live on HBCU GO.
