The Edward Waters University Department of Athletics continues to elevate its commitment to student-athlete performance with the addition of two highly accomplished strength and conditioning professionals, Devon Wilcher and Kristen Flateau.
Both coaches bring a wealth of experience at the collegiate and professional levels, reinforcing EWU's mission to enhance athletic performance, injury prevention, and overall student-athlete development.
Wilcher arrives at Edward Waters with over two decades of coaching and training experience, including an extensive background in both collegiate athletics and military performance training. A certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Wilcher has served in key roles at multiple NCAA Division I institutions, including the University at Buffalo and Stony Brook University, where he helped design and implement comprehensive performance programs for football and track and field.
Most recently, Wilcher has contributed to performance optimization initiatives with the U.S. Army's 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, while also working with Texas Christian University Football. His work has emphasized the integration of advanced performance technologies such as GPS tracking systems and force plate analysis to maximize athlete output and reduce injury risk.
A retired United States Marine, Wilcher's leadership extends far beyond the weight room. His military service from 2001 to 2019 instilled a culture of discipline, resilience, and accountability—qualities he now brings to the development of EWU student-athletes.
Flateau joins the Tigers as a dynamic and emerging leader in strength and conditioning, with experience across multiple Division I programs. Most recently serving as Assistant Director of Speed, Strength, and Conditioning at Coastal Carolina University, she oversaw performance programs for several sports, including women's lacrosse, volleyball, and men's soccer, while assisting with football.
Flateau's expertise includes athlete monitoring and performance analytics, utilizing cutting-edge tools such as Catapult GPS systems and VALD ForceDecks to track workload, assess neuromuscular readiness, and guide return-to-play protocols. Her data-driven approach ensures that training programs are both efficient and tailored to individual athlete needs.
Prior to her time at Coastal Carolina, Flateau gained valuable experience at Gardner-Webb University, where she was responsible for designing strength and conditioning programs for five Division I teams. She also continues to work with athletes at various levels, from youth to collegiate, emphasizing speed, agility, and long-term athletic development.
With the addition of Wilcher and Flateau, Edward Waters strengthens its infrastructure for athletic excellence. Their combined expertise in performance training, injury prevention, and athlete development will play a critical role in preparing Tiger student-athletes to compete at the highest level.
As EWU Athletics continues its upward trajectory, the impact of these two hires will be felt across all programs—helping to build stronger, faster, and more resilient Tigers both on and off the field.
