JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Edward Waters University family is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved figures — Gerald "Pop" Joins, Sr., a pillar of strength, warmth, and unwavering support whose impact reached far beyond the sidelines.
Affectionately known simply as "Pop," Mr. Joins was more than a father, and community leader — he was a mentor, motivator, and father figure to generations of student-athletes. His deep love for Edward Waters University and its athletic programs could be felt in every encouraging word, every sideline smile, and every moment he gave of himself to help lift those around him.
Whether cheering from the sidelines, supporting from the locker room, or offering a kind word of wisdom, Pop's presence was constant, comforting, and commanding. He didn't need a title or spotlight — his influence was felt in the way he carried himself, and in the way he made others feel.
His legacy will live on not only through his children and family but, also those who followed in his footsteps as leaders and athletes at Edward Waters, but through the countless lives he touched with his compassion and consistency.
Pop's voice, his wisdom, and his ever-present support will be deeply missed — but his legacy is eternal. It lives in the Tiger pride he helped build and in the lives of every student-athlete who was blessed to know him.
In honor of Gerald "Pop" Joins, Sr., Edward Waters University will continue to carry his spirit forward — with love, with pride, and with purpose.
Rest in power, Pop. Your light will never dim.
Memorial service arrangements are forthcoming. Please contact Gerald Joins Jr. (his son) for more information.
