Jacksonville, Fla. — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has announced its 2025-26 preseason honors, and Edward Waters University forward
Amari Floyd has been recognized as the SIAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year while also earning a spot on the Preseason First-Team All-SIAC list.
Floyd is the first Tiger to garner both preseason honors since EWU joined the Division II ranks.
Floyd, a native of Atlanta, Ga., returns as a cornerstone for the Tigers, bringing versatility, energy, and leadership on both ends of the floor. Known for his ability to guard all five positions and consistently make momentum-shifting plays, Floyd has established himself as one of the premier two-way players in the conference.
Last season, Floyd appeared in 27 games for Edward Waters, posting averages of 10.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game and 2.0 steals per game.
He shot an efficient 55% from the field and 30% from three-point range, while also leading the Tigers in total minutes played despite missing two games due to injury.
Floyd reached double figures in scoring 14 times, including one double-double performance against USC-Beaufort, showcasing his ability to contribute consistently across multiple areas of the game.
Beyond the stat sheet, Floyd's defensive intensity and ability to disrupt opposing offenses have been a hallmark of his game. His knack for creating turnovers and sparking transition opportunities makes him one of the most dangerous defenders in all of the country.
"Amari is the type of player every coach wants on the floor," said Head Coach
Cabral Huff. "He's versatile, unselfish, and has the ability to change the game defensively. Being recognized as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year is a testament to his hard work, and we're excited about what he'll bring this season."
As the Tigers prepare for the 2025-26 campaign, Floyd will once again be at the heart of Edward Waters' game plan, anchoring the defense while providing consistent scoring and leadership. With Floyd leading the charge, EWU is poised to be a tough opponent in SIAC play, despite being picked to finish fifth in the East Division this season.
The Tigers will open their season with exhibition action on October 21 with a trip west on i-10 to square off agaisnt Florida A&M University, before returning home to Adams-Jenkins Complex for two additional preseason matchups against Santa Fe College and Florida State College at Jacksonville.
