Tigers Give Back: EWU Men’s Basketball and Women’s Volleyball Teams Inspire Students at North Shore Elementary

Jacksonville, Fla. — The spirit of service and community shined bright as Edward Waters University's men's basketball and women's volleyball student-athletes kicked off the school year by supporting students at North Shore Elementary School on their first day back to class.

The Tigers swapped their jerseys for smiles, guiding young students through the hallways, helping them find their classrooms, and cheering them on as they began a new academic year. The event, part of EWU Athletics' ongoing community engagement initiatives, highlights the university's commitment to empowering the next generation of students both on and off the court.

From high-fives and fist bumps to offering encouraging words, EWU student-athletes from both programs made it their mission to ensure North Shore students started the school year with confidence. Coaches and players alike assisted teachers, greeted families, and helped ease the nerves of first-day jitters.

"This is what being a Tiger is all about," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Cabral Huff. "Our guys know that success isn't just measured by wins and losses — it's about showing up for the community and being role models for the youth who look up to them."

Women's Volleyball Head Coach Lauren Ford echoed similar sentiments, praising her student-athletes for their leadership and enthusiasm.

"Our team loves giving back and today was a reminder that we're more than athletes," she said. "These young students see us, and we want them to know that with hard work and dedication, they can achieve anything."

For many EWU student-athletes, events like this one at North Shore Elementary represent an opportunity to give back to a community that supports them year-round. Sophomore volleyball standout Brooklyn Jones shared how meaningful the experience was:

"It felt amazing to be there for the kids," she said. "Seeing their excitement and knowing we played a small role in making their first day special was unforgettable."

The partnership between Edward Waters Athletics and local schools like North Shore reflects the university's ongoing mission to inspire, engage, and uplift Jacksonville's youth.

As the Tigers prepare for their upcoming seasons, both programs remain dedicated to serving as leaders in the community. Whether dominating on the hardwood or rallying on the volleyball court, EWU student-athletes continue to embody the university's values — demonstrating that leadership extends far beyond the scoreboard.
