EWU Baseball Sweeps Road Series Over Lane 3-0

Jackson, TN., -- The Edward Waters baseball team picked up a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) three game road series win over Lane College.

The Tigers are still holding tight to the third spot in the SIAC Baseball Standings with a 1908 conference record and a 26-15 overall mark on the season.

In the opening game of the series, Hugo Schoening drove in four runs on four hits to lead EWU past Lane, 9-2. Schoening singled in the fourth scoring three, singled in the sixth scoring one, and hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh scoring one.

A single by Micheal O'Neill put Lane College on the board in the bottom of the second.

Torry Jones hit a sacrifice fly, which helped the Tigers tie the game at one in the top of the third.

In the top of the fourth, Edward Waters broke up the tie when Dannon Smith grounded out, scoring one run. Then a single by Schoening followed to extend the lead to 5-1.

Anthony Bayyat earned the win for EWU. The pitcher gave up nine hits and two runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out five and walking two. Bayyat is now 6-1 on the season. Andres Carracciolo and Elvin Polanco each threw scoreless innings for the Tigers in relief.

Caden Hutchinson collected two hits for Edward Waters in five at bats. Schoening, Dave Mitchum, and Hutchinson each stole multiple bases for EWU as the squad stole eight bases in the game.

In the second game of the series, Edward Waters snatched the lead late in their 7-5 victory over Lane. The game was tied at five in the top of the seventh when Tyler Smith singled, scoring two runs.

EWU jumped out to the lead in the top of the third inning after Misael Ramos was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and Caden Hutchinson doubled, scoring three runs.

The Dragons made the score 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth after Eli Garcia tripled, scoring three runs, and Nick Deterding grounded out, scoring one run.

Edward Waters took the lead, 7-5, in the top of the seventh thanks to singles by Dannon Smith, and Tyler Smith.

Luis Valero earned the win for the Tigers. The reliever allowed two hits and one run over three innings, striking out three and walking three. Liam Prepetit began the game for EWU. The pitcher gave up two hits and four runs over four innings, striking out two and walking five.

Hutchinson provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led EWU with three runs batted in. The left fielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Chase Morris and Hutchinson each collected two hits for Edward Waters.

In the series finale, the Tigers were the first to get on the board in the fourth when Caden Hutchinson doubled, scoring one run.

EWU scored six runs on three hits in the top of the eighth inning. Erickson Matos drew a walk, scoring one run, Chase Morris was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Hutchinson was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Hugo Schoening grounded out, scoring one run, and Torry Jones singled, scoring two runs.

Alexander Davila earned the win for the Tigers. The righty surrendered two hits and zero runs over six and one-third innings, striking out two and walking two. Davila now sits at 9-1 on the season. Josh Taylor tossed one inning of shutout ball for EWU in relief. The hurler surrendered zero hits, striking out none and walking none.

Edward Waters piled up 13 hits in the game. Matos led the Tigers with three runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-2 on the day. Jones led EWU with three hits in five at bats. Misael Ramos, Raul Ramirez, and Tyler Smith each collected multiple hits for EWU. Smith led the Tigers with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating nine walks for the game. Jones stole two bases and EWU turned two double plays in the game.

The Tigers will return to action with a single home South Regional matchup against Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, April 15 at 5:00 pm at historic JP Small Memorial Park.
