Columbia, S.C. – The Edward Waters baseball team compiled a 2-1 series road victory over SIAC East Division foe Benedict on Saturday and Sunday at Tiger Field.
In the opening game of the series, a walk-off left EWU on the wrong end of a 20-19 defeat to Benedict Tigers on Saturday. The game was tied at 19 in the bottom of the tenth when Cameron Haley singled, scoring one run.
Despite the loss, EWU did collect 18 hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Benedict Tigers had 20 hits on the way to a victory.
Edward Waters opened the scoring in the first after
Hugo Schoening hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.
The EWU Tigers committed an error, which helped Benedict Tigers tie the game at one in the bottom of the first.
A single by Kenyan Conner gave Benedict Tigers the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the second.
Benedict scored five runs on one hit in the bottom of the third inning. An error scored one run, an error scored two runs, Nicholas Gioia singled, scoring one run, and a wild pitch scored one run.
The EWU Tigers flipped the game on its head in the top of the fourth, scoring seven runs on three hits to take the lead, 9-8. The biggest blow in the inning was a home run to left field by
Caden Hutchinson on a 0-2 count that drove in three.
EWU added to their lead with six runs in the top of the fifth inning thanks to home runs by J.C. Medina and
Torry Jones.
BC scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run to center field by Isaiah Canty.
Benedict scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jeremy Nieves induced Conner to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, Gioia singled, scoring one run, Jonathan Olmedo doubled, scoring two runs, and an error scored one run.
The BC Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a home run to left field by Gioia, a double by Olmedo, and a double play.
Nieves pitched three and one-third innings in relief for EWU. The reliever gave up six hits and seven runs (zero earned) while, striking out one and walking two.
Anthony Bayyat started the game for Edward Waters. The righty gave up six hits and eight runs (three earned) over two and one-third innings, striking out none and walking two.
The EWU Tigers amassed 18 hits in the game. Leadoff hitter
Dave Mitchum led EWU with four hits in five at bats. Jones and Schoening were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in four runs for EWU.
Chase Morris, Medina,
Andres Carracciolo, and
Jordan Smith each collected multiple hits for EWU. Mitchum and Hutchinson each stole multiple bases for EWU as the team stole seven bases in the game. Edward Waters turned five double plays in the game.
The second game of the series would end up being delayed in the 5th inning due to visibility issues at Tiger Field.
Raul Ramirez collected three hits in four at bats, as EWU defeated Benedict Tigers 21-4 in the contest. Ramirez hit a solo home run to left field in the third inning, doubled in the first inning, and doubled in the fifth inning.
EWU jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after
Andres Carracciolo drew a walk, scoring one run, Ramirez doubled, scoring two runs, and
Caden Hutchinson grounded out, scoring one run.
Edward Waters added one run in the second after
Hugo Schoening walked.
The EWU Tigers added two more runs in the top of the third inning on two hits. Ramirez hit a solo home run to left field, and
Michael Thomas grounded out, scoring one run.
EWU scored eight runs on eight hits in the top of the fourth inning.
Torry Jones doubled, scoring one run, Carracciolo singled, scoring one run,
Erickson Matos singled, scoring one run, Thomas doubled, scoring three runs,
Jordan Smith doubled, scoring one run, and
Dave Mitchum grounded out, scoring one run.
The Benedict Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a home run to left field by Carson Fellows on the sixth pitch of the at-bat.
Liam Prepetit earned the win for EWU. The starting pitcher gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out one and walking one.
Xerian Ximinies collected the save.
Edward Waters accumulated 15 hits in the game. Jones and Ramirez each collected three hits for EWU. Mitchum collected two hits for EWU in five at bats. The EWU Tigers had a strong eye at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game. Jones and Schoening led the team with two bases on balls each. Mitchum stole four bases
There were plenty of runs in Sunday's series finale, as Edward Waters defeated Benedict 13-10. EWU collected 15 hits, while BC had 10.
Dave Mitchum collected three hits in four at bats in the win. Mitchum doubled in the first inning, singled in the second inning, and singled in the fifth inning.
EWU got on the board in the top of the first inning after
Hugo Schoening singled down the right field line, and
Torry Jones doubled down the left field line, each scoring one run.
Cameron Haley singled down the right field line, which helped Benedict tie the game at two in the bottom of the first.
The EWU Tigers took the lead in the top of the second. Mitchum singled, scoring one run, to give EWU the leg up, 3-2.
Edward Waters added one run in the third after
Caden Hutchinson hit a sacrifice fly.
Three more EWU Tiger runs crossed the plate in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 11-3. Aidan Rice hit a solo home run to left field, an error scored one run, and Jones drew a walk, scoring one run.
The Benedict Tigers scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the ninth inning. Isaiah Canty singled, scoring one run, Haley singled, scoring one run, Yosmill Diaz grounded out, scoring one run, and Nicholas Gioia homered to left field, scoring three runs.
Alexander Davila earned the win for EWU. The starter gave up six hits and three runs over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.
Jeremyah Martinez and
William Valenti each appeared in relief for EWU.
Edward Waters collected 15 hits in the game. Jones, Schoening, and Mitchum each collected three hits for EWU. Schoening led the EWU Tigers with three runs batted in. The infielder went 3-for-6 on the day.
The Tigers will return to action with a SIAC home series against the visiting Albany State Golden Rams on Friday and Saturday, March 14 and 15. All games will be played at JP Small Memorial Park.
