EWU Tigers Baseball Drops Three Games in Road Series Against Spring Hill

Mobile, AL., -- The Edward Waters baseball dropped all three games of their SIAC road series against Spring Hill College over the weekend. 

Edward Waters University Tigers fell, 7-6 in the opening contest on Friday on the final play of the game. The game was tied at six in the bottom of the ninth when Parker Serio drew a walk, scoring one run.

Spring Hill was the first to get on the board in the first when Eli Benoit doubled, scoring one run.

SHC added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Arlon Butts singled down the left field line, and Jackson Bell tripled to center field, each scoring one run.

Edward Waters scored one run in the top of the third on a solo home run to left field by Erickson Matos.

EWU tied the game up in the top of the fifth thanks to two singles. The Tigers tied the game at four on a single by Misael Ramos.

A triple by Dannon Smith gave Edward Waters the lead, 5-4, in the top of the sixth.

Spring Hill tied the game in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a single by Reggie Cooper, and a hit by a pitch.

Cameron Chastain took the loss for Edward Waters. The reliever went one-third of an inning, allowing one run on one hit, striking out none and walking three. Anthony Bayyat started on the mound for the Tigers. The starter gave up six hits and four runs (two earned) over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking two. 

Edward Waters collected 10 hits in the game. Matos and Smith each collected two hits for the Tigers. Smith went 2-for-5 at the plate and led the team with two runs batted in.

In the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader, Edward Waters had trouble keeping up with Spring Hill in a 7-1 loss. 

EWU got on the board in the first when Dave Mitchum hit a solo home run to left field.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Badgers went back into the lead after Parker Serio singled to center field, Reggie Cooper singled down the right field line, and Alexander Davila balked, each scoring one run.

Davila began the game for EWU. The pitcher gave up eight hits and six runs over five innings, striking out three and walking four. 

Torry Jones, Misael Ramos, Chase Morris, J.C. Medina, Hugo Schoening, and Mitchum each collected one hit for Edward Waters. Mitchum led the Tigers with one run batted in. The right fielder, went 1-for-4 on the day.

In the final game of the series, the Tigers had the lead in the early innings of the game before ultimately falling, 6-3.

A single by Raul Ramirez on the sixth pitch of the at-bat put the Tigers on the board in the top of the second.

Jack Taylor grounded into a fielder's choice, which helped the Badgers tie the game at one in the bottom of the second.

Spring hill flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on four hits to take the lead, 6-1. The biggest blow in the inning was a triple by Jackson Bell on the sixth pitch of the at-bat that drove in three.

Jeremy Nieves took the loss for the Tigers. The righty went four and one-third innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking none.

Torry Jones and Ramirez each collected two hits for Edward Waters. Ramirez went 2-for-3 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. 

The Tigers will return to the playing diamond with DII South Region game against USC-Beaufort on Tuesday, March 4 at J.P. Small Memorial Park with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
