EWU Baseball Goes 2-1 in Big Cat Series Against Florida Memorial

Miami, FL., -- The Edward Waters Baseball team claimed two out of three games in their three-game Big Cat Series against Florida Memorial over the weekend. 

Torry Jones hit two home runs and drove in five as Edward Waters University Tigers defeated Florida Memorial University Baseball Lions 13-12 on Friday. Jones homered in the second and sixth innings.

Both offenses were strong at the plate as the EWU Tigers collected 12 hits and the Florida Memorial Lions 12 in the high-scoring affair. An error put the Tigers on the board in the top of the first.

The Lions took the lead, 4-1, in the bottom of the first thanks to home runs by Christian Carratala and Raymond Rivera.

Edward Waters flipped the game on its head in the top of the second, scoring six runs on four hits to take the lead, 7-4. The biggest blow in the inning was a grand slam to left field by Jones that drove in four.

Florida Memorial  tied the game in the bottom of the second thanks to a single by Reinaldo Prieto, and an error. The Lions took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Martinez doubled, scoring one run, to give Florida Memorial the lead, 8-7. FMU committed an error, which helped EWU tie the game at eight in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions went back into the lead after Jason Ramos grounded out, Prieto walked, Armando Ramirez singled, and Kidane Stephens walked, each scoring one run.

Edward Waters scored one run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to left field by Jones. The Edward Waters Tigers  took the lead, 13-12, in the top of the ninth thanks to singles by Dave Mitchum and Dannon Smith.

Andres Carracciolo earned the win for the Tigers. The righty surrendered zero hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out five and walking two. Anthony Bayyat started the game for Edward Waters. The starter allowed 10 hits and eight runs (seven earned) over three and one-third innings, striking out four and walking two. William Hiciano led things off on the hill for Florida Memorial. The starter surrendered five hits and eight runs (six earned) over five innings, striking out two and walking none. Cameron Chastain collected the save. Luis Valero and Elvin Polanco each appeared in relief for the Edward Waters Tigers.

EWU amassed 12 hits in the game. Misael Ramos and Erickson Matos each collected multiple hits for Edward Waters.The Tigers ran wild on the base paths, amassing three stolen bases for the game. 

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Edward Waters Tigers jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after Torry Jones singled, scoring one run, a passed ball scored one run, and Erickson Matos doubled, scoring two runs.

The Tigers added one run in the second. Misael Ramos walked, making the score 5-1.

Alexander Davila earned the win for EWU. The starting pitcher allowed three hits and one run (zero earned) over six innings, striking out four and walking two. Jerryk Caceres took the loss for Florida Memorial. The reliever went two innings, giving up two runs on three hits, striking out two and walking two. Daniel Ramos stepped on the mound first for FMU. The starting pitcher gave up three hits and seven runs (zero earned) over three and one-third innings, striking out five and walking four. William Valenti pitched one inning of zero-run ball for Edward Waters  in relief. The reliever allowed zero hits, striking out none and walking none.

The Tigers accumulated nine hits in the game. Ramos went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead EWU in hits. Jones paced Edward Waters with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, piling up seven walks for the game. Dave Mitchum stole two bases. The Tigers stole five bases in the game.

The Edward Waters Tigers fell 4-1 to Florida Memorial in the final game of the series despite out-hitting them 10 to two. Torry Jones led EWU with three hits. The Lions opened the scoring in the third after Christopher Marte homered to left field, scoring three runs.

Jesus Portillo earned the win for Florida Memorial . The pitcher allowed six hits and one run (zero earned) over five innings, striking out six and walking four. Liam Prepetit took the loss for Edward Waters. The righty went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits, striking out seven and walking three.

The Tigers amassed 10 hits in the game. Misael Ramos led EWU with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game. 

Edward Waters will return to action with their first home series of the 2025 season as they host the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians for a three-game SIAC series Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15 at Henry L. Aaron Field at James P. Small Memorial Park.
