EWU Tigers Baseball Sweeps Weekend Series Over LeMoyne-Owen

Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters baseball team swept their three game home opening series over LeMoyne-Owen this weekend at JP Smalls Memorial Stadium.

Senior Torry Jones drove in six runs on three hits to lead Edward Waters past LeMoyne-Owen, 13-3 in the opening game of their Saturday doubleheader. Jones hit a home run to left field in the first scoring three. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth scoring one, singled in the fifth scoring one, and doubled in the seventh scoring one.

EWU opened the scoring in the first after Jones homered to left field, scoring three runs.

The Tigers added to their early lead in the bottom of the second inning after Dave Mitchum hit a sacrifice fly, and Dannon Smith singled to left field, each scoring one run.

Anthony Bayyat earned the win for Edward Waters. The right-handed pitcher surrendered five hits and three runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out three and walking one. Aiden McCallister took the loss for LeMoyne-Owen. The left-handed pitcher went four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on nine hits, striking out two and walking four. Jayden Smith began the game for LeMoyne-Owen. The hurler allowed five hits and five runs (four earned) over one and one-third innings, striking out none and walking one.

Edward Waters piled up 15 hits in the game. Jones and Hugo Schoening each collected three hits for EWU. Misael Ramos, J.C. Medina, and Jordan Smith each collected multiple hits for the Tigers. Smith led Edward Waters with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game. Dannon Smith and Jordan Smith each stole multiple bases for Edward Waters. EWU ran wild on the base paths, amassing six stolen bases for the game.

In the final game of the doubleheader Torry Jones drove in seven runs on three hits to lead Edward Waters past LeMoyne-Owen, 30-6 on Saturday evening. Jones hit a grand slam to center field in the second inning, scoring four runs, and doubled in the sixth inning, scoring three.

The Tigers scored 20 runs in the sixth inning on the way to victory.  Chase Morris was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Dave Mitchum drew a walk, scoring one run, Dannon Smith drew a walk, scoring one run, Jones doubled, scoring three runs, Efrain Pantoja doubled, scoring one run, Erickson Matos was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Morris drew a walk, scoring one run, Mitchum was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, D. Smith singled, scoring two runs, Misael Ramos doubled, scoring two runs, Hugo Schoening doubled, scoring two runs, Matos doubled, scoring one run, Jordan Smith doubled, scoring one run, and Morris hit an inside the park home run, scoring two runs.
 
Edward Waters jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the second inning after D. Smith singled, scoring one run, Smith drew a walk, scoring one run, and Jones hit a grand slam to center field.
EWU added two runs in the third after Mitchum singled to right field.

LeMoyne-Owen scored one run in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to left field by Ibrahim Marrero. Onterio Sealie homered to left field, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh for the LeMoyne-Owen.

Liam Prepetit earned the win for the Tigers. The hurler allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking one. Trae Burton took the loss for LeMoyne-Owen. The starter went three innings, giving up eight runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking four. Cason Shurling threw one inning of scoreless ball for Edward Waters in relief. The right-handed pitcher surrendered zero hits, striking out one and walking none.

The Tigers piled up 17 hits in the game. Number eight hitter, Jordan Smith, showed the depth of the Tigers lineup, by leading them with four hits in four at bats. Ramos, Morris, and Mitchum each collected multiple hits for Edward Waters. The Tigers had patience at the plate, accumulating 12 walks for the game. Ramos, D. Smith, Schoening, Mitchum, and J. Smith led the team with two bases on balls each. Edward Waters stole five bases in the game.

In the series finale Efrain Pantoja hit two home runs and drove in eight as Edward Waters defeated LeMoyne-Owen, 16-7 on Sunday. Pantoja homered in the third and seventh innings.

EWU BASE FINAL LOC

Bats blistered as Edward Waters collected 14 hits and LeMoyne-Owen tallied nine in the high-scoring game.

LeMoyne-Owen got on the board in the top of the first inning after Trae Burton hit a sacrifice fly, Nathan Sanchez lined out, and Tahj Williams singled to left field, each scoring one run.

The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the first thanks to a triple by Pantoja and a single by Andres Carracciolo.

EWU made the score 7-3 in the bottom of the second after Torry Jones doubled, scoring two runs, Misael Ramos singled, scoring one run, and Pantoja singled, scoring one run.
 
Four more Edward Waters runs crossed the plate in the third inning to extend the lead to 11-3. Ramos doubled, scoring one run, and Pantoja homered to left field, scoring three runs.
The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a home run to center field by Pantoja.

Alexander Davila earned the win for Edward Waters. The hurler gave up six hits and three runs over five innings, striking out three and walking one. Vincent Norvell took the loss for LOC. The reliever went three and one-third innings, surrendering seven runs (five earned) on five hits, striking out none and walking four. Kevin Maya opened the game for LeMoyne-Owen. The pitcher surrendered eight hits and seven runs (zero earned) over one and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking none. Jermyah Martinez and Josh Taylor each appeared in relief for Edward Waters.

Edward Waters University Tigers collected 14 hits in the game. Ramos, Carracciolo, and Dave Mitchum each collected multiple hits for the Tigers. Edward Waters University Tigers were sure handed in the field and didn't commit a single error while also turning one double play. Carracciolo had the most chances in the field with eight.

The Tigers will be back on diamond for a South Regional road game against Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, February 18 at Silwa Stadum in Daytona Beach. Opening pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
