Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters baseball team split their home doubleheader to the visiting Voorhees University Tigers on Tuesday at J.P. Small Memorial Park.
Edward Waters suffered their first home loss of the season as they dropped the doubleheader opener 4-2 to Voorhees.
Voorhees got on the board in the top of the first inning after drawing a walk, scoring one run, and a double, scoring two runs.
The Voorhees Tigers added one run in the third on a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-0.
Edward Waters made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Torry Jones hit a solo home run to center field, and
Hugo Schoening hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run. For Jones it was his league ledaing eight of the season.Â
William Valenti took the loss for Edward Waters. The starting pitcher went two and one-third innings, giving up four runs on three hits, striking out none and walking three.Â
Jones, Schoening,
Dave Mitchum,
Jordan Smith, and
Caden Hutchinson each collected one hit for the Tigers. Jones and Schoening each drove in one run for EWU.Â
In the doubleheader finale, both teams were strong on the hill, but Edward Waters defeated Voorhees university, 2-1.
Andres Carracciolo started the game for EWU and recorded nine outs.
The EWU Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning after
Dannon Smith walked, and
Torry Jones grounded into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run.
Josh Taylor earned the win for EWU. The hurler allowed three hits and one run over two innings, striking out none and walking none.
Cameron Chastain collected the save.
Jeremy Nieves tossed one inning of zero-run ball in relief. The reliever surrendered zero hits, striking out none and walking none.
Jones and Smith were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for the Tigers. Smith,
Hugo Schoening, and
Caden Hutchinson each collected one hit for EWU.Â
The Tigers will hit the road for a three game SIAC series against Spring Hill College beginning Saturday, evening February 28 at 6pm (EST), followed by a Sunday doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 1pm (EST).Â
