JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Continuing its commitment to holistic student-athlete development, Edward Waters University Athletics hosted Walk On Nation on campus from October 2–3, 2025, for a two-day workshop series focused on athletic identity, personal growth, and mental well-being.
The program, led by the Walk On Nation CEO, Michael Willett, engaged Edward Waters student-athletes from seven different sports in open conversations about the mental and emotional aspects of athletic life — exploring how to find purpose, confidence, and self-worth beyond sports.
Throughout the workshops, discussions centered on major themes such as self-doubt, overthinking, fear of failure, and seeking validation from others — topics often faced by student-athletes balancing competition with personal growth.
Walk On Nation encouraged participants to reflect on how their athletic careers enhance, but do not define who they are. Through guided activities and small-group discussions, student-athletes were reminded that they are "more than an athlete", emphasizing the importance of prioritizing their mental and emotional health.
"The objective of these sessions was to help student-athletes find their identity outside of sports," said the Walk On Nation facilitators. "Athletics is a part of them — it doesn't define them. Our goal was to empower them to see that their value extends far beyond competition."
A key component of the workshops was the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) — a 10-question assessment that helps participants measure how strongly they identify with their athletic role. Scores range from 10 (not identified as an athlete) to 70 (identity solely rooted in athletics).
Research shows that athletes who score above 60 are more prone to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders after their playing careers end, making self-awareness and identity balance crucial.
A total of 19 student-athletes completed both the pre- and post-workshop AIMS assessments:
Pre-assessment average score: 54 (High: 70 | Low: 33)
Post-assessment average score: 50 (High: 67 | Low: 31)
Largest individual improvement: 15-point reduction
The modest decrease in scores indicates that student-athletes left the sessions with a healthier, more balanced sense of self — seeing themselves as individuals first, and athletes second.
A post-workshop anonymous survey revealed powerful takeaways from participants across the athletic department. Out of 169 total student-athletes involved, responses showed:
98% now understand that their identity is more than their sport.
97% feel more empowered to explore who they are outside of athletics.
99% recognize that mental health significantly impacts all areas of their lives.
Walk On Nation met with representatives from seven Edward Waters athletic programs, totaling 169 student-athletes:
Men's Basketball - 18
Women's Basketball - 29
Football - 86
Women's Golf - 3
Women's Tennis - 6
Men's Volleyball - 16
Women's Volleyball - 11
Total - 169
The sessions emphasized community, vulnerability, and conversation. Through discussion-based questions, student-athletes were encouraged to share their personal experiences and connect with peers across sports.
By the end of the workshops, the atmosphere was one of reflection, empowerment, and unity — a key step in Edward Waters' ongoing mission to nurture not only athletic champions but also well-rounded individuals prepared for life after sports.
"At Edward Waters, we're dedicated to the complete development of our student-athletes," said Interim Athletic Director Ashley Conner. "Programs like Walk On Nation align perfectly with our vision to prepare them for success — in competition, in the classroom, and in life."
Walk On Nation is a student-athlete empowerment organization that focuses on helping athletes discover their purpose, passion, and identity beyond sports. Through interactive workshops, assessments, and conversations, the organization provides resources and tools for student-athletes to thrive during and after their athletic careers.
Edward Waters University Athletics extends its gratitude to Walk On Nation for an impactful visit and looks forward to continuing partnerships that foster holistic growth, mental health awareness, and identity exploration among its student-athletes.
