Albany, Georgia-The Edward Waters baseball squad will enter the 2024 edition of the Cricket SIAC Baseball Championship as the #3 seed, their best seeding since joining the SIAC. The Purple & Orange will battle #6 seed Lane in the first contest of the double-elimination tournament on Thursday, May 2nd at 9:00am at Albany State University's West Campus.
The Tigers and Dragons faced each other this season in a three-game series in Jacksonville on February 24th-25th, with Edward Waters take two of three games in that series. Edward Waters enters the tournament with a 27-18 overall mark, and 21-11 against SIAC competition in the regular season.Â
The Purple & Orange are fourth in the conference in batting average with a .314, while slugging .942 and have a .428 on base percentage. As a team, EWU has recorded 446 hits, scored 422 runs, have driven in 383 runs, and have hit 26 homers. On the mound, the Tiger pitching staff is fifth in the league with a 6.99 earned run average, while recording 253 strikeouts.
Senior first baseman/designated hitter
Leonel Garcia, leads the Tigers offense and is 11th in the SIAC, batting .388 in the regular season. In 122 plate appearances, Garcia has 47 hits, has 26 RBI's, and one homer. Junior right fielder
Torry Jones is just outside of the top 20 in the conference, with a .358 batting average in 137 at bats. Jones also has 49 hits, 37 RBI, four homeruns, and has driven in 37.
Redshirt junior pitcher
Anthony Bayyat leads the EWU hurlers with a 5.58 ERA and a 6-1 record this season in 61.1 innings pitched with 32 strikeouts. Senior pitcher
Alexander Davila has battled through injury this season, but was able to finish the year with a 6.79 ERA, a 7-2 mark in 54.1 innings, and has a team high 43 strikeouts.
