Thomasville, Georgia-Last week, the Edward Waters baseball squad suffered a tough home loss to Thomas University. On Tuesday evening, the Tigers had revenge on their minds in a road contest against the Nighthawks at Varnadoe Stadium. The Purple & Orange had to deal with a lengthy lightning and weather delay, but were able to come out victorious with a 7-5 win, avenging their loss last week.
Edward Waters (17-12, 11-6 SIAC) started the contest out in an early hole, after giving up three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers were able to pull back a run in the top half of the third inning when
Misael Ramos had an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to two at 3-1.
Thomas (19-15, 7-11 SSAC) got back on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning on ann RBI fielder's choice, but EWU was able to again have a response in the top of the sixth.
Eric Green and
Erickson Matos each had RBI singles, and on Matos' single,
Isaiah Montes scored an unearned run making it a 4-3 Nighthawks lead.
The Purple & Orange tied the contest up in the top of the seventh with another Matos RBI groundout, knotting the score up at 4-4. The Nighthawks nudged themselves ahead in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to make it a 5-4 ballgame.
EWU had a huge response in the top of the eighth inning when
Eric Green scored on an error and
Daquarius Thompkins had an RBI sacrifice fly to retake the lead at 6-5. In the top of the ninth,
Torry Jones reached on a fielder's choice and another Nighthawk error allowed
Daiton Pass to come home, adding a key insurance run to give the Tigers a two-run advantage. The Tigers were able to hold the Nighthawks off of the scoreboard in the. bottom half of the ninth, making for a happy ride back home to Jacksonville with victory in tow.
Eric Green led EWU at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases, while
Anthony Roman finished 2-for-3 with two walks. The victory on the mound went to
Gerald Perret, who came in relief in the seventh inning, while
Austin James earned his second save of the season.
Edward Waters will return home and back to SIAC play with a three-game Easter weekend series against Tuskegee. Game one will take place on Friday at 5:00pm, while a doubleheader will commence on Saturday at 11:00am and 2:00pm. All contests will take place at Ridgeview High School in Orange Park.
