Jacksonville, Florida-For their third straight week, an Edward Waters scheduled baseball series had to be adjusted due to weather. This week, the Tigers were scheduled to play Clark Atlanta in a three-game SIAC series in Atlanta, but due to rain that affected the North Georgia area, the series was shifted to Jacksonville with CAU still being the home team. The EWU offense was unstoppable as the Tigers were able to sweep all three games in contests held at Howard Roey Field at FSCJ North Campus.
GAME ONE/FRIDAY: Edward Waters 10, Clark Atlanta 9:
The series opener ended up being a rather high scoring affair in which Edward Waters would need to come-from-behind to win. The Purple & Orange fired the opening shots of the contest in the top of the first inning with five runs scored.
Daquarius Thompkins hit a two-RBI single, then later scored on a wild pitch.
Hugo Schoening capped off the scoring in the top of the first with a two-RBI single of his own to give Edward Waters an early 5-0 lead. Clark Atlanta came back in the bottom half of the inning, pulling back to runs to make it a three run Tiger lead at 5-2.Â
The Panthers knotted up the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with three runs, then in the top of the sixth took their first lead of the game with four runs scoring to take a 9-5 lead. Edward Waters climbed their way back in a major way in the top of the seventh inning with another five run output. A bases loaded walk to
Misael Ramos, a
Dave Mitchum two-RBI single,
Anthony Roman's sacrifice fly, and a Thompkins RBI double gave the Tigers a 10-9 lead that they would be able to hold on to, earning the victory.
Daquarius Thompkins led the Tiger efforts at the plate in the contest, going 4-for-6 with three RBI's, a double, and a run scored. Both
Leonel Garcia and
Caden Hutchinson went 2-for-3 at the dish for Edward Waters in the victory as well. Reliever
Jeremyah Martinez earned the win for the Tigers on the mound, evening up his record at 1-1 on the season.
GAME TWO/SATURDAY: Edward Waters 18, Clark Atlanta 4 (7 Inn.):
The offensive fireworks for the Tigers began in the top of the second inning when
Caden Hutchinson connected on a two-run homer over the center field wall.
Dave Mitchum added another run with his RBI single that gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead. Clark Atlanta added their first runs of the contest in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a two-run homer that cut the Tiger lead to 3-2. The Purple & Orange added six more runs in the top of the third to completely put the contest away. An
Isaiah Montes sacrifice fly, two 2-RBI singles from
Hugo Schoening and
Dave Mitchum, and an RBI ground out from
Anthony Roman, made it a 9-2 Edward Waters lead.Â
The Tigers added seven more runs in the top half of the fifth inning.
Dave Mitchum came home on an error by the CAU catcher, RBI singles from Montes, Ramos, and Mitchum, and a two-RBI single from Garcia gave EWU a 16-2 lead. Clark Atlanta was able to post two runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, but a
Torry Jones solo homer in the top of the sixth, and an RBI sacrifice from
Daquarius Thompkins in the top of the seventh brought an early end to the contest via the run-rule.
Torry Jones led EWU going 3-for-5 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored while,
Leonel Garcia,
Hugo Schoening, and
Misael Ramos each went 2-for-3.
Alexander Davila took the win on the mound for the Tigers, going 5.0 innings, allowing four earned runs, three walks, and struck out four.
GAME THREE/SATURDAY: Edward Waters 19, Clark Atlanta 7:
Clark Atlanta got on the board first in the bottom half of the first inning with two runs scored to take the early lead. Edward Waters had their response in the top half of the third inning as seven runs came across the plate. A
Dave Mitchum RBI single, a bases loaded walk to
J. C. Medina, a three-run double from
Leonel Garcia, a
Caden Hutchinson RBi double, and an RBI single from
Jackson Spencer gave the Tigers a 7-2 lead. Clark Atlanta brought a run back in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to cut the Tiger lead down to four at 7-3.Â
Medina hit a two-RBI double to get the scoring started in the top of the fourth, followed by a Garcia RBI single pushed the Tiger advantage up to six at 9-3. Edward Waters exploded in the top of the fifth for eight runs.
Dave Mitchum's RBI groundout, Medina's two-RBI triple, RBI singles from
Daiton Pass,
John Nobles, and Spencer, a two-RBI fielder's choice from
Ferante Cowart pushed the EWU lead to 18-3. The Panthers added four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but
Ferante Cowart wrapped up the Tiger series sweep with an RBI single to make it a 19-7 final for Edward Waters.
J. C. Medina led Edward Waters at the dish going a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, and a triple with five RBI's and three runs scored.
Jeremy Nieves earned his first collegiate victory on the mound, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts.
Edward Waters returns to action on Tuesday, March 19th with a home non-conference matchup against Thomas University at 5:00pm.
