Jacksonville, Florida-Needing to gain some much needed ground after dropping three SIAC games to Spring Hill last week, Edward Waters welcomed Lane College to begin a three-game weekend set on Saturday at Howard Roey Field at FSCJ North Campus. The series opened with a doubleheader that EWU was able to take both games of, holding off the Dragons 9-8 in Game One, and 9-3 in Game Two.
GAME ONE: Edward Waters 9, Lane 8:
The Dragons got the scoring started in the top of the third inning with an RBI single to left field to take a 1-0 lead. Edward Waters had their response in the bottom half of the fifth when
Daiton Pass connected on a two-run homer, his first of the young campaign to give the Tigers the lead at 2-1. Lane knotted the scoring up in the top of the sixth with a run, but the Purple & Orange once again had an answer in the bottom half.
Hugo Schoening cleared the bases with a three-RBI double, then Pass added to his RBI tally a two-RBI double, giving EWU a commanding 7-2 lead.Â
The visitors chipped into the lead with two runs scored in the top of the seventh, but
Isaiah Montes' two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh gave EWU a 9-4 advantage. Lane made things interesting in the top of the ninth inning, plating four runs to cut the Tiger lead to one, but
Caden Hutchinson was able to get the final out to thwart the Dragon threat giving EWU the game one victory.
Daiton Pass finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer, a double, and four RBI's to lead the Edward Waters efforts.
Hugo Schoening also went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for the Tigers as well. Starter
Luis Valero earned the win for the Tigers on the mound, going 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs, three walks, and struck out seven.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 9, Lane 3:
Lane emphatically got the scoring started in the top of the first with two solo homers hit to take a early 2-0 lead, An RBI groundout from
Ferante Cowart put the Tigers on the board in the bottom half of the second inning, cutting the Dragons lead to one at 2-1. Another Lane solo homer in the top of the third inning put the advantage back to two at 3-1, but from there it was all Purple & Orange. An RBI sac fly from
Isaiah Montes, an RBI fielder's choice from
J. C. Medina, and
Leonel Garcia RBI single gave the Tigers their first lead of the contest at 4-3.
Cowart added to the Edward Waters advantage, blasting his first homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth, giving EWU a 6-3 lead, then in the bottom of the sixth,
J. C. Medina induced a bases loaded walk, and
Leonel Garcia hit a two-RBI single to left field giving EWU a 9-3 lead. That edge would stand up through the top of the seventh, solidifying an important SIAC sweep to start the series.
Garcia wrapped up Game Two going 3-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored to lead EWU offensively. Tiger starter
Cameron Chastain took the victory, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, three walks and struck out two.
The series ends on Sunday afternoon with a single, nine-inning affair at 12:00pm.
