Jacksonville, Florida-With a four-game losing skid coming into Wednesday afternoon's action, Edward Waters hosted former longtime NAIA foe Voorhees to Howard Roey Field for a midweek doubleheader. The Tigers were able to salvage a split of the days action, dropping Game One 6-5, but rallying back to bring the skid to a halt with a 1-0 victory in Game Two.
GAME ONE: Voorhees 6, Edward Waters 5:
The scoring got started in the bottom of the third inning on a bases loaded walk to
Daquarius Thompkins that brought in
Daiton Pass to give EWU a 1-0 lead. Edward Waters tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth with
Misael Ramos' RBI single to right field and a Voorhees balk that scored
Anthony Roman, making it a 3-0 EWU lead. Voorhees had a huge inning in the top of the seventh, with five runs crossing the plate to give the visitors a 5-3 advantage. EWU was able to tie the contest in the bottom half of the seventh on another Voorhees balk called that allowed
Eric Green to score and a Roman RBI single that knotted the contest up at 5-5, sending it to extra innings.
Voorhees cashed in on an RBI single that allowed them to retake the lead in the top of the eighth inning. The Purple & Orange were unable to respond in the home half of the eighth, sending them to their fifth consecutive loss.Â
Misael Ramos was lone Tiger to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Edward Waters sent six pitchers to the mound, with
Jeremyah Martinez taking the loss in relief, going 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, and a strikeout. EWU starter
Elvin Polanco received a no-decision going 2.0 innings, and recording two strikeouts in his brief appearance.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 1, Voorhees 0:
The second contest of the day proved to be a pure pitcher's dual between EWU starter
Anthony Bayyat and Voorhees' Angel Morel. The Voorhees starter carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth inning, when
Jackson Spencer hit a single to left field.
John Nobles was able to reward the effort with an RBI single up the middle that brought home
Ferante Cowart to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead that they would see through to the finish line, snapping the skid and salvaging the day.
Bayyat finished the afternoon with a complete game shutout going 7.0Â innings, allowing five hits, and struck out three.
Edward Waters will continue their home stand on Saturday and Sunday with a three-game SIAC series against Lane College. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 1:00pm, while the Sunday finale gets started at 12:00pm.
