Baseball Swept By Spring Hill In SIAC Opening Series

Jacksonville, Florida-Edward Waters had an inauspicious start to SIAC play as the Tigers dropped all three games of their home series to defending conference champion Spring Hill. The Tigers dropped Thursday's opener 15-4 in seven innings, then both games of Friday's doubleheader 7-5 and 9-4.

GAME ONE: Spring Hill 15, Edward Waters 4 (7 Inn.):
Spring Hill opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, pushing four runs across the plate to take the lead, then added another run in the top of the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Edward Waters got on the board in the bottom. half of the fifth on a passed ball that brought Misael Ramos home, and a Daquarius Thompkins two-RBI single to cut the deficit to two at 5-3.

In the next half inning, the Badgers added four more runs to push their advantage out to 9-3. In the bottom half of the sixth, Anthony Roman scored on an SHC error to cut the lead to 9-4, but the Badgers completely put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs to bring an early end to the contest.

Edward Waters struck out eight times in the contest as a team, while also leaving eight men on the basepaths. Torry Jones, Isaiah Montes, Anthony Roman, Misael Ramos, and Daiton Pass each recorded two hits for the Tigers. Luis Valero was charged with the loss at the plate, going 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs, five walks, and struck out seven.

GAME TWO: Spring Hill 7,  Edward Waters 5:
The Badgers scored the first three runs of the contest with two in the top of the first and another in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Torry Jones hit an RBI sacrifice that brought home Misael Ramos to cut the deficit to two at 3-1 through three innings.

SHC pushed the lead back to three in in the top of the fourth, adding one more run, but in the bottom of the fifth, Ramos smacked a RBI single to left field to make it a 4-2 contest. The Badgers had another crooked number inning in the top of the seventh adding three more runs to take a 7-2 lead. A solo homer by Anthony Roman in the bottom of the seventh, and a two run shot by Isaiah Montes in the bottom of the eighth unfortunately were not enough, as Spring Hill took the game and the series.

Eight more strikeouts by Tiger batters proved to be their worst enemy in the contest. Hugo Schoening and Dave Mitchum each had two hits to lead the Tigers efforts in the contest. Starter Cameron Chastain took the loss on the hill for EWU going 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, six earned runs, four walks, and struck out three.

GAME THREE: Spring Hill 9, Edward Waters 3:
Things started off incredibly rocky for the Tigers as Spring Hill scored the first four runs of the contest in the top of the first innings, including a two-run homer to take a 4-0 lead. The Tigers responded in the bottom half of the third on a Torry Jones two-RBI triple that cut the Badger lead in half at 4-2.

Spring Hill added a single run in the top of the fourth, but Jones cashed in on an RBI double that made it a 5-3 contest. The contest got away from the Tigers in the top of the seventh as SHC scored three more runs to put the contest away and sweep EWU.

Jones ended his contest going 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three RBI's. Sebastian Velez took. the loss going 3.2 innings, allowing five hits, five earned runs, three walks, and struck out two.

Edward Waters will look to bring a halt to their four-game skid on Wednesday with a home doubleheader against Voorhees at 1:00pm and 4:00pm at FSCJ North Campus.
