Baseball Comes Up Short At Embry-Riddle

Daytona Beach, Florida-Tuesday's road contest for Edward Waters against former longtime NAIA rival Embry-Riddle turned out to be a high scoring affair. Unfortunately for the Purple & Orange, they came out on the short end of the result, falling 11-7 to the Eagles at Sliwa Stadium.

The Tigers (4-3) had several opportunities in the contest to cash in on scoring opportunities, but left seven men on the basepaths and struck out a combined 12 times at the plate. EWU was able to fire the opening salvo in the contest in the top of the first inning on a Daquarius Thompkins RBI sacrifice fly that gave them a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the first, ERAU (5-3) returned the favor with an RBI sac fly of the their own to knot the game up at 1-1.

The Purple & Orange were able to quickly retake the lead in the top of the second when Misael Ramos reached on an RBI fielder's choice that allowed Hugo Schoening to score. Torry Jones also connected on an RBI single that brought home Ramos and gave the visitors a 3-1 advantage. EWU padded their lead in the top of the third when Isaiah Montes hit an RBI single to center field to make it a 4-1 contest. Things quickly went south for the Tigers in the bottom of the third as the Eagles scored five runs to take a 6-4 lead.

Embry-Riddle added an extra run in the top of the sixth on an RBI fielders choice to make it a 7-4 ballgame before Edward Waters was able to wake up. In the top of the seventh, Thompkins hit a three RBI single to tie the contest up at 7-7. Unfortunately, ERAU took the lead for good in the bottom half of the seventh plating four runs, including a two-run homer to retake the lead at 11-7 which would turn out to be the final score.

Torry Jones, Dave Mitchum, and Leonel Garcia each recorded two hits in the contest for Edward Waters, while Daquarius Thompkins had four RBIs. Ferante Cowart was charged with the loss in the matchup as EWU sent 10 arms to the hill.

Edward Waters will open SIAC play on Thursday as they will begin a three-game homestand against defending conference champ Spring Hill. First pitch is slated for 6:00pm at FSCJ North Campus (4501 Capper Road, Jacksonville, FL, 32218).
