Jacksonville, Florida-History was made on Saturday afternoon during the 2023 Edward Waters University Commencement Exercises at the John Hurst Adams-Jimmy R. Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex. During. the event, EWU awarded 110 students with their undergraduate degrees and for the first time in the 157-year history of the institution, 23 students received their graduate degrees.
Of those graduates, 38 student-athletes and one graduate assistant coach walked across the stage to have their degrees conferred upon them by President/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr. Women's Basketball all-time leading scorer, rebounder, and the first student-athlete to have her jersey retired La'Quanza Glover and Track & Field National Championships representative Jamal Bouie were have the distinctions of becoming the first "Double Tigers" in EWU Athletics history, both receiving their bachelors and masters degree at Edward Waters. Men's Basketball graduate assistant coach Malcolm Smith also received his masters of business administration during the event as well.
The Edward Waters football squad led the way in graduates with 11, followed by the baseball squad with six, the women's volleyball and women's basketball programs tied with five apiece, and the softball squad with four. Four student-athletes graduated Summa Cum Laude with an overall grade point average of 3.8 or higher, four received Magna Cum Laude honors with a 3.5 GPA or higher, two graduated Cum Laude with a GPA of 3.2 or higher, and one graduated with Honors with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
