Jacksonville, Florida-A contest that was marred with self-inflicted wounds, hurt Edward Waters in their 13-2 home loss to Embry-Riddle, Tuesday evening at Henry L. Aaron Field at James P. Small Memorial Park. The contest was the first meeting between the two squads since 2012, when both squads were members of The Sun Conference.
In the contest, Edward Waters (1-2) had six hits, but could not get any traction to them as the Purple & Orange hit into three critical double plays, hurting any real chances at big offensive innings. Additionally, the Tigers had several defensive miscues with five critical errors in the field.
Embry-Riddle (3-2) opened the scoring in the top of the second with two runs and repeating the feat again in the top of the third. Edward Waters was able to cut in to the lead in the bottom half of the 4th inning on
Payton Shubert's RBI sacrifice fly that scored
Daiton Pass to cut the deficit to three at 4-1.Â
The Eagles hit the scoreboard again, effectively putting the game out of reach in the top of the 5th with a two-run homer and added two more runs in the top of the sixth and five in the top of the 8th. EWU did post another run in the bottom of the 8th with another Shubert RBI, but it was not enough to keep the contest going as the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.Â
Dwanye Maduro was charged with the loss for EWU, going 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, three walks, but did record six punchouts in the contest.
Edward Waters will begin a three-game weekend series against Claflin on Friday at 6:00pm, followed by a doubleheader scheduled on Saturday starting at 4:00pm at home.
