JACKSON, Miss. — The Edward Waters University football team suffered a 66-14 road loss to NCAA Division I opponent Jackson State University on Saturday evening in the HOPE Labor Day Classic at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The loss moves the Tigers to 1-1 on the season as Edward Waters looks to regroup following its first road contest of the 2026 campaign.
Jackson State took control early, building a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter before adding 24 points in the second quarter to take a 38-0 advantage into halftime. The hosts continued to add to their lead in the second half, finishing the contest with 704 yards of total offense.
Despite the final score, the Tigers continued to compete and produced a pair of second-half touchdowns.
Dylan McCarthy provided one of the biggest plays of the night for the Edward Waters defense, intercepting a Jackson State pass and returning it 52 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter to put the Tigers on the scoreboard.
Edward Waters added its second score of the evening in the fourth quarter when Torey Morrison broke free for a 29-yard touchdown run, capping a seven-play, 52-yard scoring drive.
Senior quarterback Tavion Faulk completed 11-of-26 passes for 157 yards in the contest. Izaiah Jean-Baptiste led the Tigers' receivers with four catches for 64 yards, while Xavier Irvin added two receptions for 55 yards.
Morrison also contributed to the offense through the air and on the ground, completing two passes for 26 yards while rushing for 19 yards and the Tigers' offensive touchdown.
Defensively, Trevon French led the Tigers with nine total tackles. Mataye Youman also compiled nine total tackles and a quarterback hurry. Lemar Harris and Travias Rackard both added six tackles apiece.
The Tigers will now turn their attention toward conference play as they continue their road trip next weekend.
Edward Waters will travel to face Miles College on Saturday, September 12, with kickoff scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EST.
