Thompson Earns SIAC Setter of the Week Honors After Strong Week for Lady Tigers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Edward Waters University freshman setter Naraiya Thompson has been named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Setter of the Week following another impressive stretch for the Lady Tigers.

Thompson continued her outstanding freshman campaign by helping Edward Waters post a 3-1 record over four matches, highlighted by a perfect 3-0 performance in conference play at the SIAC Crossover.

Across the four matches, Thompson totaled 98 assists, 23 digs, five kills and four service aces, continuing to establish herself as one of the top young setters in the conference.

Her play was instrumental in a dominant weekend for Edward Waters at the SIAC Crossover. The Lady Tigers opened the event with a 3-0 victory over LeMoyne-Owen before battling past Tuskegee in five sets, 3-2. EWU completed its perfect crossover run with a 3-0 sweep of Kentucky State.

Thompson has been a steady presence directing the Edward Waters offense throughout her first collegiate season. She currently ranks fifth in the SIAC with 348 total assists, helping distribute the ball to an increasingly productive group of Lady Tiger attackers.

The freshman's ability to contribute beyond setting has also been valuable for EWU. Thompson's 23 digs during the week showcased her defensive presence, while she continued to provide additional production as an attacker and from the service line.

Her performance comes during an impressive turnaround for the Lady Tigers in conference play. After dropping their first three SIAC contests, Edward Waters has responded by winning six consecutive conference matches, improving to 7-7 overall and 6-3 in SIAC play.

Thompson's recognition also continues a strong freshman season in which she has quickly taken on a significant role in the Edward Waters offense.

The Lady Tigers will look to extend their conference winning streak when they travel to Allen University on Thursday. Edward Waters will then return to Jacksonville for back-to-back home matches, welcoming Benedict College on Saturday before facing Allen University on Sunday.
