Atlanta, GA., -- The Edward Waters baseball team claimed a three-game SIAC East Division road series sweep over Morehouse during Easter weekend.
In the opening game of the series,
Dave Mitchum drove in four runs on two hits to lead EWU past Morehouse Tigers 6-4. In the sixth inning, Mitchum hit a grand slam to right field.
Morehouse got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after TJ Whiteman singled down the right field line, Raymond Jenkins tripled down the right field line, and James Thorpe grounded into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run.
Edward Waters flipped the game on its head in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on two hits to take the lead, 6-3. The biggest blow in the inning was a grand slam to right field by Mitchum that drove in four.
Anthony Bayyat earned the win for EWU. The starter surrendered five hits and three runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out two and walking four.
Luis Valero appeared in relief for EWU.
Raul Ramirez and Mitchum each collected two hits for the EWU Tigers. EWU also stole six bases in the game and turned one double play in the game.
In the doubleheader opener,
Dannon Smith collected three hits in five at bats, as Edward Waters defeated Morehouse 13-5. Smith singled in the eighth inning, singled in the fourth inning, and singled in the seventh inning.
EWU jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after
Torry Jones singled, scoring one run, and
Caden Hutchinson doubled, scoring two runs.
The EWU Tigers added one run in the second after
Hugo Schoening singled to center field.
Edward Waters added one run in the third.
Tyler Smith walked, making the score 5-0.
Morehouse scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a home run to center field by Nicholas Pittman.
Jeremy Nieves earned the win for the EWU Tigers. The righty allowed zero hits and one run over one inning, striking out none and walking two. Â
Alexander Davila opened the game for EWU. The right-handed pitcher surrendered seven hits and four runs over four and one-third innings, striking out five and walking four.
Bruno Lopez collected the save and
Cameron Chastain also appeared in relief for the EWU Tigers.
Edward Waters collected 18 hits in the game. Jones went 4-for-6 at the plate to lead EWU in hits.
Misael Ramos and
Raul Ramirez each collected multiple hits for the EWU Tigers. Edward Waters had a strong eye at the plate, collecting 10 walks for the game. Ramirez,
Dave Mitchum, and Smith led the team with two walks each. Ramos, D. Smith, and T. Smith each stole multiple bases for EWU as the team stole eight bases in the game. The EWU Tigers turned in two double plays in the game.
In the final game of the series, EWU defeated Morehouse Tigers 8-3.
Edward Waters jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after
Torry Jones singled, scoring one run,
Caden Hutchinson doubled, scoring one run, JC Medina singled, scoring two runs,
Jordan Smith doubled, scoring one run, and
Erickson Matos doubled, scoring one run.
Morehouse Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run to left field by Darrien Chapman.
Liam Prepetit earned the win for EWU. The righty allowed five hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out five and walking one.
Jeremyah Martinez and
Josh Taylor each appeared in relief for EWU.
EWU collected 10 hits in the game, led by Jones,
Misael Ramos, Matos, Medina,
Andres Carracciolo,
Hugo Schoening,
Dave Mitchum,
Efrain Pantoja, Smith, and Hutchinson each collecting one hit for the Tigers. Medina led Edward Waters with two runs batted in. The catcher went 1-for-3 on the day. Mitchum and Hutchinson each stole multiple bases for EWU as the team stole six bases in the game.
