Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters women's basketball suffered a pair of back-to-back road losses to Fort Valley State and Albany State to kick start their Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division schedule.
The Lady Tigers dropped a 61-57 game to Fort Valley State on Saturday afternoon before falling to Albany State on 57-50 on Monday night. The losses snapped a three-game win streak for EWU as they moved to 5-4 in SIAC with a 9-5 mark on the season overall.
With senior center
Imani Harris not in the lineup, Edward Waters struggled in the painted area being outscored and out rebounded by the Wildcats 36 to 24 and 43 to 34. Despite the setbacks, the Lady Tigers showed resilience and determination throughout the ballgame.
In the game-deciding fourth quarter, it would be the home team Wildcats that converted 11 of their 12 final quarter foul shots to pull away with the four-point victory.
Senior forward
Simona Henshaw led Edward Waters with 13 points, four rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal in 33 minutes of action. Guard
Tatum Hayes added 10 points and three rebounds.
Nekaya Williams and
Mia Morel both chipped in eight points each.
In the Lady Tigers couldn't overcome a cold shooting night in their match up against Albany State on Monday night. Even when they weren't shooting their best, Edward Waters gave forth a valiant effort and used key plays to take a 27-18 lead into the half. But the Lady Golden Rams outscored the Lady Tigers 22-10 to take the lead into the fourth. A lead they would hold for the rest of the contest.
EWU was led by
Taniah Bowers' 10 points, six rebounds and three steals in 222 reserve minutes.
E'laijha Brown added nine points, four rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.
Simona Henshaw tallied seven points with nine rebounds and
Tatum Hayes finished with seven points and three assists.
The Lady Tigers will be off for a week before returning to action with a MLK Monday evening match up with the visiting Clark Atlanta Panthers on January 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
