Edward Waters Drops Heartbreaker to Benedict, 31-28 on Final Play of Regulation

Columbia, S.C., — The Edward Waters football team suffered a heart-breaking defeat on the last play on the final play of regulation as they fell 31-28 to the Benedict Tigers Thursday night at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium. 

After an EWU punt and just 35 seconds left in the game, Benedict used a six play, 80 yard drive to score as quarterback Charles Simmons connected with Malayhi Jones in the corner of the end zone. 

With the loss, the Tigers move to 1-3 on the season with a 1-1 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action. For Benedict the win moved them to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in SIAC play. 

After falling behind, 14-0 in the opening minutes of the contest, the Tigers battled back to take a 28-25 lead into the final quarter of action. 

Junior quarterback Keith Moore II played an amazing game going 13 for 18 with 201 yards passing and two touchdowns. Moore added another 15 yards rushing and another touchdown on the ground. Moore's first touchdown pass went to Makai Lovett on a 56 yard hookup for EWU's first touchdown of the ballgame. 

Moore's second touchdown went to a familiar target as he found Raveon Moore on a 22-yard connection in the end zone. Raveon Moore finished the game with four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. 

On the ground, Brady Tillman led all rushers with 79 yards on the ground on 12 carries. Johntarrious Thomas added 56 yards rushing, including an 18 yard touchdown run. 

Defensively Jonathan Nesbit led Edward Water with seven total tackles. Stephan French finished with six tackles and snagged his second interception of the season. Senior Widmyer Garçon also compiled six tackles for EWU. 

Edward Waters next time taking the field will be inside Glover Field and Stadium as they welcome in the Tuskegee Golden Tigers for their home opener Saturday afternoon, September 28 at 4:00 p.m.
