GAME PREVIEW: Edward Waters Football Set to Visit Alcorn State for Saturday Showdown

Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters Football team will head to Mississippi for a Saturday afternoon showdown against the Braves of Alcorn State. EWU is looking to bounce back after a toss road loss to Florida Memorial and ASU is looking to claim their first victory of the season after a rough start.

Both teams are coming off losses in week 2 action and are looking to get back to their winning ways. The game will be held in Lorman, MS at the Spinks-Casem Stadium on the campus of ASU. Fans can listen to the action on WPRL 91.7 FM.

SERIES HISTORY:
Saturday's meeting will be the 2nd meeting all-time between the Tigers and the Braves. Alcorn State won the only match up between the squads by a score of 63-12 back in 2013.

PREVIEWING EDWARD WATERS
The Edward Waters Tigers suffered their first loss of the season with a 31-21 road loss to Florida Memorial last Saturday. The Tigers now stand a 1-1 on the season as they head into week three. 

Offensively the Tigers got a spark from Junior quarterback Keith Moore II, who stepped in under center late in the first half. Moore, who was playing in his hometown of Miami, compiled 83 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. Brady Tillman leads the EWU rushing attack with 127 total yards through two games. Sophomore running back Gregory Mango is close behind with 109 yards through two contests. Johnny Jones leads the Tigers receiving corps with 75 yards so far this season. Tight ends Raveon Moore and Fatoma Paulk both have receiving touchdowns this season. 

The Edward Waters defense has received well-rounded contribution from a variety of players. Defensive back Stephan French leads the squad with 12 total tackles to go along with one interception and one fumble recovery. Senior linebacker Widmyer Garçon is tied for second with 10 tackles and one fumble recovery of his own. Also in the secondary, De'Angelo Sapp leads EWU with two interceptions and two tackles for loss. Jonathan Nesbit has also tallied 10 tackles, including one tackle for loss. 

PREVIEWING ALCORN STATE
Alcorn State was picked to finish first West Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) under first year head coach Cedric Thomas. The Braves are currently sitting 0-2 after losses UAB and Vanderbilt to start the season. 

Xzavier Vaughn leads the Alcon passing attack with 45 yards on 10 completions in two games. Vaughn is second on the team with 42 yards rushing. Tyler Macon leads the Braves overall rushing attack with 61 yards on the ground. First-Team All-SWAC defensive lineman Malachi Bailey has compiled six total tackles and two quarterback hurries. Second-Team All-SWAC defensive back Edwin Summerour leads the Braves with 11 total tackles, one forced fumble and a tackle for loss. 

NEXT GAME:
Edward Waters will have a quick turnaround as they round up their early season round trip with a trip to Columbia, South Carolina to play Benedict on Thursday night, September 19. This will be the Tigers first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) contest of the season. The game will take place at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium
