Baseball Season Ends With Loss To Bluefield State At BCWS

Montgomery, Alabama-One last comeback attempt for the "Cardiac Cats" came up just short as Edward Waters dropped a 12-7 decision to Bluefield State in an elimination contest at the Black College World Series on Friday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium.

Edward Waters was able to plate the first three runs of the contest in the top of the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Daquarius Thompkins and Hugo Schoening, along with an RBI sacrifice fly from Leonel Garcia. The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the second, when Thompkins had an RBI triple to stretch the EWU lead to 4-0.

The bottom of the third proved to be problematic for the Tigers as Bluefield State scored five runs, including a grand slam that gave the Big Blue a 5-4 lead. An RBI triple from BSU added another run to make it a 6-4 ballgame.

The Purple & Orange got back on the board in the top of the seventh on a three run, inside-the-park homerun from Torry Jones that allowed the Tigers to recapture the lead at 7-6. The EWU lead was short lived as BSU scored five runs in the bottom half of the seventh, then added another run in the bottom of the eighth to put the contest away and end EWU's 2024 season.

Daquarius Thompkins and Hugo Schoening each had three hits in the matchup for Edward Waters to lead the way. Jeremyah Martinez took the loss in relief for the Tigers in the contest.

Despite the loss, Edward Waters can still call 2024 a wildly successful campaign. The Tigers ended the year with a 31-19 overall record, including going 21-11 in SIAC regular season play and capturing the program's first SIAC Tournament Championship. The Tigers will turn their attentions to 2025, which will be their first season being fully eligible to compete for an NCAA Division II Championship.
