Jacksonville, Florida-The Edward Waters offense was plentiful on Monday evening as the Lady Tigers were able to flex their dominance with a doubleheader sweep of city rival Trinity Baptist at the TBC Softball Complex. The Lady Tigers took Game One 16-3 in six innings, and held off the Eagles 6-3 in Game Two to earn their 29th and 30th victories of the season.
GAME ONE: Edward Waters 16, Trinity Baptist 3 (6 Inn.)
Edward Waters emphatically got the scoring started in the top of the first inning.
Brooke Rice connected on an RBI single to center field,
Kylah Gardner smacked a three-run homer over the left field wall, and
Caitlynne Lamug hit an RBI double to left field to take a 5-0 lead. TBC countered with a two-run double in the bottom half of the inning to cut the led to three.
EWU got back in the groove in the top of the second with two runs. A
Jade Mention RBI single to center field and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to
Caitlynne Lamug extended the Lady Tiger lead back to five at 7-2. Trinity Baptist was able to score on a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to cut the deficit to four at 7-3, but Edward Waters had a huge response in the top of the sixth scoring nine runs to put the game completely out of reach.
Jade Mention was able to score on a TBC error,
Kylah Gardner and
Gracie Mejia each had RBI singles, Katie Good had a bases loaded walk that earned her an RBI,
Kloe Sisson had a two RBI single,
Brooke Rice hit an RBI single, and Gardner earned a two-RBI single to give EWU a commanding 16-3 lead. EWU was able to hold TBC off of the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth to bring an early end to the contest via the run-rule.
Gardner and Mention each recorded three hits in the contest, while Rice, Mejia, and
Caitlynne Lamug had two.
Shai-Ann Currie recorded her seventh win of the season, going 6.0 innings and recording one strikeout.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 6, Trinity Baptist 3:
Katie Goodin smacked a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Trinity Baptist responded with an RBI sac fly in the bottom of the first to halve the lead at 2-1. The Eagles later took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth, courtesy of a two-run triple to take a 3-2 advantage.
Jade Mention scored in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at 3-3. Later in the top of the sixth, EWU was able to retake the lead thanks to a
Brooke Rice RBI single, and a
Kylah Gardner two-run homer to take a 6-3 lead. Trinity Baptist came back with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough as EWU held off the Eagles to earn the doubleheader sweep.
Jodasea Peterson earned the victory for EWU, going 7.0 innings and recording three strikeouts.
Edward Waters will turn their attentions back to SIAC play with a weekend road series at Clark Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday.
