Jacksonville, Florida-It was a perfect a start to a series that could be had as Edward Waters welcomed Benedict in an SIAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon at J. Gardner "Nip" Sams Memorial Park. In two games, the senior pitching duo of
Jodasea Peterson and
Milani Sablan combined to allow just one hit, while
Brooke Rice hit two three-run homers in the Lady Tigers 9-0 and 8-0 run-rule sweep of Benedict to keep pace in the East Division race.
GAME ONE: Edward Waters 9, Benedict 0 (5 Inn.)
Kloe Sisson led the EWU onslaught in Game One with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first that gave the home squad the early 1-0 lead. The Purple & Orange padded their lead in the bottom of the third with four runs scored. RBI singles from
Brooke Rice,
Jade Mention, and
Gracie Mejia, along with an RBI sac fly from
Kylah Gardner made it a 5-0 EWU lead.
The Lady Tigers added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, on Rice's three-run homer over the left field wall and a Gardner RBI double to left field, giving Edward Waters a 9-0 lead. Starter
Jodasea Peterson was able to close out the contest in the bottom of the fifth, recording back-to-back strikeouts after a groundout to solidify a 9-0 run rule victory and her first no-hitter of the season.
Brooke Rice led EWU going 2-for-3 with a homerun, four RBI's and two runs scored. Peterson moved her record to 12-6 on the year while recording eight strikeouts in her no-hit bid.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 8, Benedict 0 (5 Inn.)
Brooke Rice got things started with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Rice later added to her monster day in the bottom of the third, smacking another three-run shot over the centerfield wall to add to the Lady Tiger lead at 4-0.
Laura Scott added to the EWU hit parade in the bottom of the third with an RBI single,
Katie Goodin recorded an RBI double, and
Kloe Sisson reached on an error whle also picking up an RBI, giving Edward Waters a 7-0 lead.
Mhasiah Patterson closed things out in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI single, giving EWU an 8-0 run rule victory in Game Two.
Rice once again led the Lady Tigers at the plate going 2-for-3 with four more RBI's, a homerun, and a run scored.
Milani Sablan nearly had her own no-hitter, but had to settle for a one-hit shutout, with eight strikeouts.
Eight seniors will be honored in their final home contest of their collegiate careers on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm in the final contest of the series at J. Gardner "Nip" Sams Memorial Park.
