Jacksonville, Florida-With their back firmly against the wall, the Edward Waters baseball squad welcomed rival Savannah State to town for a three-game series. The Tigers were able to rise to the occasion, earning an emotional sweep of the series, moving themselves to sole possession of third place in the SIAC standings.
GAME ONE: Edward Waters 10, Savannah State 5:
The scoring started for the home team in the bottom half of the first inning on
Isaiah Montes' two-RBIÂ single to left field. In the bottom of the second, the Tigers cashed in with three more runs courtesy of
Erickson Matos' and
Daquarius Thompkins' RBI singles, and a
Dave Mitchum RBI double that gave EWU a 5-0 lead.
Montes got back in the scoring act in the bottom of the third with a solo homer, followed by a Matos two-RBI single, and Mitchum earning another RBI that pushed the Tiger lead to 10-0. Savannah State scored in the top of the fourth with a solo homer, then in the top of the seventh pushed four more runs across to halve the lead to five, but EWU was able to close the door to earn the win in Game One.
Leonel Garcia went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the way for Edward Waters, while Mitchum, Thompkins, Montes, Hutchinson, and Matos each had two hits for the Tigers.
Anthony Bayyat continued to remain undefeated on the season pitching for EWU, going 6.2 innings, and recording four strikeouts in the victory.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 9, Savannah State 4:
Anthony Roman had an RBI single that opened the scoring for Edward Waters to take an early 1-0 inning after one complete inning. Savannah State took their first lead of the day in the top of the second with three runs, but EWU fired back with three of their own in the home half of the second.
Dave Mitchum hit an RBI single,
Erickson Matos hit an RBI single and later came home on an error to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
Torry Jones hit an RBI double in the home half of the third to create a little distance to take a 5-3 lead. In the top of the fourth, Savannah State cut the lead back to one with an RBI fielder's choice, but Edward Waters had their response in the bottom of the seventh.
Isaiah Montes' two-RBI single and
Torry Jones's RBI sacrifice fly pushed the lead 8-4, then in bottom of the eighth, Montes earned another RBI with a sacrifice fly that gave the Tigers a 9-4 lead. The Tigers were able to close things out to earn the victory and clinch the series.
Dave Mitchum finished 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the way for EWU, while Montes and Jones each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Alexander Davila earned the win for the Tigers, going 6.2 innings, allowing three earned runs and struck out four.
GAME THREE: Edward Waters 16, Savannah State 15 (7 Inn.):
The final contest of the series was one of the the wildest contests of the season. A bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the decider in giving Edward Waters the win and clinching a sweep of the series.
Edward Waters had to fight from behind for much of the contest, finally drawing even in the bottom of the fourth inning at 8-8. EWU took their first lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, but from there, the contest went back and forth. SSU tied the contest in the top of the sixth at 11-11, then EWU surged back ahead in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take a 14-11 lead.Â
Savannah State would not go quietly as they exploded with four runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead back at 15-14, but Edward Waters would have something in store in the home half of the seventh. SSU walked the bases loaded, then a
Ferante Cowart hit-by-pitch brought home the tying run. The next batter,
Dave Mitchum was walked with bases loaded, giving EWU a walkoff victory and the series sweep.
Isaiah Montes and
Hugo Schoening each went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Tigers with three RBI's apiece.
Carson Hurst took the victory in relief for Edward Waters on the mound.
Edward Waters will host Embry-Riddle in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, April 16th at 5:00pm at FSCJ North Campus.
