Tigers Outlast Kentucky State In Road SIAC Win

Frankfort, Kentucky-Edward Waters began a nine-game road trip on Friday evening as they headed back into conference play to matchup against Kentucky State in a matchup at the Exum Center. The Tigers dropped the first set to the Thorobreds, but rallied to win the next three to remain undefeated in SIAC play.

Edward Waters (5-7, 2-0 SIAC) met some resistance from Kentucky State (2-8, 1-2 SIAC) in the opening set. With the score tied at eight early, Kentucky State went on a 7-3 run to take a 15-11 lead that turned out to be all the momentum they would need to win 25-22. The Set #1 win for the Thorobreds would be their first win over EWU in the four previous meetings between the two teams. That would be all the motivation the Tigers would need to dominate the match from that moment on.

An angry group of Tigers opened the second set up on an 8-1 run to cruise their way to a 25-15 win in Set #2 to tie the contest up at 1-1. In Set #3 the contest went back-and-forth in the early portion, but a three point run for the Tigers gave them a 7-5 lead. Later, the advantage grew to as many as nine points, and Edward Waters took a 2-1 lead in the match, winning 25-19. In what would turn out to be the final set, EWU scored the first three points, but later, the Thorobreds would tie the contest up at 8-8. KYSU would take a 13-11 lead, but EWU would later tie the match up at 13-13. With the match later tied at 20-20, Edward Waters would close the contest in style, going on a 5-1 run to win 25-21 and take a 3-1 match victory.

The Tigers outhit Kentucky State .248 to .054 in the contest, recording 46 kills, 43 assists, and 41 digs. Tavion Ford led the Tigers with 15 kills, including three service aces, while Dillon Taylor chipped in with 10 kills. Jackson Mandell finished with four blocks, Kenyon Haynes had 37 assists, and Oneil Daley finished with nine digs.

Edward Waters will continue the road trip on Saturday afternoon in Ohio for a 3:00pm first serve against Central State.
