Wilberforce, Ohio-Since men's volleyball was established as a varsity sport in 2022 by the SIAC, Edward Waters and Central State have been the class of the conference. The two squads have met in the final contest of the first two SIAC Men's Volleyball Championships, with Central State taking the inaugural title in 2022, and Edward Waters earning their revenge in 2023. On Saturday afternoon, the two teams once again met in another key conference matchup at Beacom-Lewis Gymnasium. Edward Waters was able to rise to the occasion to earn a 3-0 sweep of the Marauders to remain undefeated in SIAC play.
Edward Waters (6-7, 3-0 SIAC) led by as many as five points in the opening set and were able to ride that momentum to a 25-20 win. Set #2 went back and forth for a majority of the action, but EWU was able to take the last two points to win 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead. A 9-3 run for Edward Waters in the final set was more than enough fuel to see them through to a 25-20 win and a straight sets victory.
The Purple & Orange hit .189 as a squad, while Central State had a .161 hitting percentage. The Marauders recorded 35 kills to 34 for the Tigers, but EWU took the edge in service aces with five, and blocks with 10.Â
Tavion Ford turned in a match high 14 kills, including three service aces, and also added eight digs.
Jackson Mandell once again led the Tigers with six blocks, while
Kenyon Haynes finished with 25 assists.
Edward Waters heads to just outside of Cincinnati for their next action as they will face Thomas More University on Monday evening at 7:00pm.
