Jacksonville, FL -- The Edward Waters Lady Tigers opened their Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) home action with a 58-53 victory over the visiting Lane College Dragons tonight inside the Adams-Jenkins complex.
With the victory the Lady Tigers improve to 5-2 on the season with a 2-1 mark in conference action.
It was a back and forth contest between the Lady Tigers and Dragons and despite being outscored in the paint, from the bench and in second chance points, EWU was able to pull away late in the fourth quarter for the SIAC win.
Both squads played smothering defense as neither team shot over 40% for the game. The Lady Tigers forced 29 turnovers that they converted into 26 points. Edward Waters collected a season best 15 steals in the contest.
Junior guard Nekaya Williams led the way for the Lady Tigers with 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Williams knocked down four of her five foul shots.
Senior center Imani Harris also chipped in 13 points and led EWU with six rebounds and three steals. Harris sank nine fouls shots while going 2-for-4 from the field.
E'laijha Brown, Simona Henshaw and Taniah Bowers all contributed seven points apiece. Brown led the way defensively with four steals, to go along with three rebounds while shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor. Henshaw grabbed three rebounds and Bowers dished out a team best three assists.
The Lady Tigers are winners in three of their last four games and look to carry that winning momentum into their home match up against LeMoyne-Owen on Monday, December 16. Tip off is at 5:30 p.m. Inside the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
