Jacksonville, FL., -- The Edward Waters football team dropped their home contest to the visiting Fort Valley State Wildcats Saturday evening inside Nathaniel Glover Stadium.
With rain starting to poor during the coin toss, the Tigers found themselves battling not only the weather but an energized Wildcats squad. FVSU jumped out to 21-0 lead at halftime after a couple rushing touchdowns and a punt return score as well.
Known for being a second half team, the Tigers came out a picked up a defensive touchdown after defensive back Stephan French forced a fumble off a hard hit. Fellow defensive back Travis McNichols scooped up the ball off the turf for the Tigers first score of the game.
After Fort Valley State responded with another score, junior quarterback Juwan Dent found tight end Fatoma Paulk streaking out in the flats. Paulk then took the reception down the Tiger sideline for a 51 yard touchdown, his second of the season.
Unfortunately, those would be the last points of the contest for the Tigers as FVSU finished the game with 21 points in the fourth quarter to put the game completely out of reach.
Dent led the Tigers with 256 yards passing on 21 completions. The Richmond, Virginia native also threw for one touchdown and one interception. Dent was also sacked five times in the ballgame. Makai Lovett led all Tiger receivers with 87 yards on four catches. Deven Thompson also notched four receptions for a total of 61 yards on the day.
Stephan French led Edward Waters with 10 total tackles, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble. Senior Widmyer Garcon added six total tackles, while defensive backs Dartrell Rolle and De'Angelo Sapp chipped in five tackles apiece. Travis McNichols compiled three tackles, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception.
The Tigers will have a much needed bye week before returning home for an SIAC match up against the Savannah State Tigers on October 19 at 6:00 pm inside Nathaniel Glover Stadium.
