Jacksonville, FL.,-- The Edward Waters football dropped a close home meeting, 20-27 to the visiting Savannah State Tigers Saturday night inside Nathaniel Glover Stadium.
EWU took an early lead as Kentrelle Williams weaved his way through gaping holes in the Savannah State defense. Williams scored on a 15 yard run to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Savannah State would tie things up at 7-7 as Tigers quarterback Jhaydon Sullivan found Kihry Wallace in the back of the endzone.
After a trip to the redzone, Edward Waters pushed ahead 10-7 on a 30 yard field goal from Cooper Badics just before halftime.
Edward Waters opened the second half with a 5:07 drive that resulted in a one yard touchdown run for quarterback Juwan Dent. Again the visiting Tigers responded with touchdown drive sparked by a 52 yard reception from Sullivan to Brent Carr.
Cooper Badics moved the EWU lead to 20-14 with a 32 yard field goal to wrap up the third quarter. But it would be 13 fourth quarter points from Savannah State that would propel them to a 27-20 road victory.
Receiver Da'Shun Mitchell hauled in a deep 63 yard touchdown pass on his shoulder pad to edge the Savannah State ahead 21-20. After an Edward Waters fumble on the ensuing kickoff gave Savannah State the ball on the EWU 20 yard line, SSU widened their lead to 27-20. A deficit the home town Tigers could not overcome.
Senior running back Kentrelle Williams rushed for a career best 146 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. Williams also registered 21 yards on his lone catch of the ball game. Quarterback Juwan Dent threw for 142 yards on 15/21 passing. He added another 16 yards on the ground. Johnny Jones II led the Tigers with four catches and 47 yards receiving. Jones also added another 75 yards on kick returns. Deven Thompson collected five passes for 44 yards for EWU.
Defensively the Tigers were led by Javon Miller and his six total tackles including a half sack. Defensive back Travis McNichols chipped in five tackles and a pass break up. Stephan French also tallied five tackles for Edward Waters. De'Angelo Sapp and Jonathan Nesbit notched three tackles each while Tyreese Williams added three tackles and a half sack. Widmyer Garcon recorded a sack and a tackle for a loss.
Savannah State quarterback Jhaydon Sullivan finished the contest with 256 yards passing and four touchdowns. Da'Shun Mitchell compiled 101 yards and two touchdowns on four catches. Brent Carr also added four catches for 97 yards.
After three home games in four weeks, Edward Waters will hit the road for a SIAC road meeting against Albany State next Saturday, October 26 at 2:00pm inside the Albany State University Coliseum.
