Jacksonville, Florida-Edward Waters picked up their first victory of the young season, 3-1 over visiting Warner University on Tuesday evening inside the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex. The victory also marked the first for new head coach Lauren Ford in coaching the women's team.
The Lady Tigers (1-1, 0-0 SIAC) showed major resolve in the first set, withstanding an early charge from the visitors from Polk County. Edward Waters trailed by as many as six points in the set, before rallying to take it 25-23 and lead 1-0 in the match. Set #2 however was dominated by Warner as they cruised to a 24-14 win to square the contest at 1-1. The Lady Tigers rode the momentum of a raucous home crowd and responded in-kind with a 25-23 victory in Set #3 and closed things out 25-19 in Set #4 to earn Victory #1 of the year.
Warner did out hit Edward Waters .203 to .158 in the match, but the Lady Tigers were able to take major advantage of the Royal's errors to get the win.
Naomy Vergez Varona led EWU with 15 kills, followed by
Fatima Ramirez with 9 and
Victoria McCoy with eight.
Mataiya Barber dished out a match high 34 assists, while
Jenieth Guzman had 19 digs for EWU.
Edward Waters hits the road on Friday afternoon with a 12:00pm first serve against Lynn University in Boca Raton.
