Jacksonville, Florida-After 90 hard fought minutes, the Edward Waters women's soccer squad was able to withstand a stiff challenge from a winless Florida National squad on Monday afternoon at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium. The Lady Tigers and Conquistadors had to settle for a 2-2 draw, preserving EWU's undefeated mark to close their homestand.
Edward Waters (5-0-2) was under constant pressure in the first half from the visiting Conquistadors (0-3-2), ultimately conceding the opening goal in the contest in the 33rd minute to uncharacteristically fall behind 1-0. Just five minutes later in the 38th minute, the nation's leading goal scorer
Dahien Cabrera added to her goal tally, scoring her 11th goal of the season to knot the contest up at 1-1.
The second half was a similar story with Florida National again scoring the first goal, this time in the 53rd minute to retake the lead at 2-1. Things looked bleak for the Lady Tigers, until Katherina Weigl found the end of a corner kick from
Sophia Paffrath to again level the match. Edward Waters had an opportunity to score the game winning goal in the 79th minute, thanks to an FNU handball in the box that allowed the Lady Tigers to have a penalty shot. Unfortunately, Cabrera's attempt from the spot was pushed left and the two teams had to settle for a draw.
Cabrera led all players with eight total shots in the match, followed by
Libby Brown with five and
Claudia Mate with 4. EWU goalkeeper
Sheila Pascual kept her record spotless on the season with the draw, facing seven shots. and five.
Edward Waters will hit the road for the first time this season on Wednesday, September 27th as they will face Florida Southern in Lakeland at 7:00pm.
