Tigers Repeat Bid Falls Short In NCAA DII Bracket Title Game Loss To Albany State

Montgomery, Alabama-An abysmal top of the first inning proved to be the undoing for Edward Waters in their 8-3 loss to #1 seed Albany State in the Tyson Foods Black College World Series NCAA Division II Bracket Championship Game on Friday evening at Riverwalk Stadium.

Edward Waters had an uphill battle from the start after giving up seven runs in the top of the first inning, including a two-run homer that spelled disaster. The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third on Leonel Garcia's RBI sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to six at 7-1.

Albany State tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh to extend the advantage back out to seven at 8-1. The Tigers attempted to mount a Herculean comeback in bottom of the ninth inning scoring two runs on a balk and an RBI single from Ferante Cowart to cut the lead five, but it was too little and much too late as the bid to repeat as HBCU National Champions came up short.

The Golden Rams posted 17 hits in the contest, while Edward Waters had nine and stranded eight runners on base. Garcia ended up leading the Tigers at the dish, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Caden Hutchinson went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

On the hill, starter Sebastian Velez was chased after going just 0.2 innings, giving up six hits, seven earned runs, and a walk and was charged with the loss. Reliever Jeremyah Martinez stopped the bleeding over the next 6.1 innings, allowing one walk and striking out five. Carson Hurst and Austin James each went 1.0 innings pitching for Edward Waters.

Despite the tough close to the season, Edward Waters was able to lock up their second consecutive season of plus .500 baseball, finishing 26-24, while also going 16-13 in their first full season as an SIAC member. Head Coach Reginald Johnson and his coaching staff now turn their attentions to the recruiting trail as the squad looks to reload and go for another championship in 2024.
