Late Inning Run Dooms Tigers In Close Loss To Albany State At BCWS

Montgomery, Alabama-Edward Waters had their opportunities to pick up a momentum building victory over #1 seed Albany State in the opening contest of the 2023 Tyson Foods Black College World Series on Wednesday afternoon at Riverwalk Stadium. Unfortunately for the defending champions, a Golden Ram run in the bottom of the 8th inning proved to be the difference as the Tigers fell 3-2 in the matchup of the two SIAC squads.

The Tigers (24-23, 16-13 SIAC) scored first in the contest on a Daiton Pass RBI sac fly that scored Leonel Garcia in the top of the fourth inning to give Edward Waters a 1-0 lead. Albany State (36-10, 30-2 SIAC) responded in the bottom half of the fifth inning on an RBI single to tie things up at 1-1. EWU seized control of the game back in the top of the sixth on Caden Hutchinson's RBI single in the top of the sixth to make it a 2-1 ballgame. The Golden Rams again would not go away as an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth plated a run to tie the contest again at 2-2. The bottom half of the eighth inning proved to be rocky for the Tigers as they allowed the bases to be loaded with no one out. Albany State made the Tigers pay, scoring the go-ahead run at 3-2. Edward Waters could not get any offense going in the top of the ninth inning and Albany State sent the Tigers to the Loser's Bracket with the one run victory.

Leonel Garcia and Hugo Schoening had the multi hit games for Edward Waters, each going 2-for-2 in the contest. Despite the loss, freshman starting pitcher Dwanye Maduro had his best outing of the season. The freshman from the U. S. Virgin Islands pitched a complete game, allowed two earned runs, scattered 10 hits, and struck out nine in the contest.

Edward Waters will look to stave off elimination on Thursday at 10:00am as they will take on the loser of Wednesday's #2 Savannah State/#3 Bluefield State matchup.
