Baseball Picks Up Three-Game Road Sweep Of Morehouse

Atlanta, Georgia-With the SIAC Baseball Championship and Black College World Series just weeks away, Edward Waters traveled to face Morehouse for a vitally important three-game series. The Tigers were able to sweep all three games of the series and make a big jump in their conference standing from the eighth and final spot in the SIAC Tournament to the sixth spot.

(FRIDAY) GAME ONE: Edward Waters 13, Morehouse 4:
The Purple & Orange started their series out with a bang, picking up a nine run victory in Game One on Friday. The Tigers offense was plentiful to say the least in the contest, racking up 20 hits in the contest. After the first two innings went scoreless, Edward Waters got their offense started in the top of the third with a two-run homer from Hugo Schoening and Leonel Garcia scoring on a Maroon Tiger error, giving EWU a 3-0 lead. The Tigers added a another run in the top of the fourth as Schoening added another RBI with a single.

Edward Waters added three runs in the top of the fifth with a two-RBI single from Dwanye Maduro and an RBI single from Anthony Roman to give the Tigers a 7-0 advantage. Morehouse got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer, cutting the EWU lead to five. John Nobles pushed the Edward Waters lead back out to seven thanks to an RBI double to make it a 9-2 ballgame. The Maroon Tigers added a lone run in the bottom of the seventh to making the score 9-3. Payton Shubert hit an RBI fielder's choice, while Anthony Roman connected on an RBI double to push the EWU advantage to 11-2 in the top of the eighth. Daquarius Thompkins hit a two-run homer over the right field wall in the top of the ninth to give the Tigers a double-digit lead at 13-3. Morehouse added just one in the home half of the ninth, but they came up nine runs short as Edward Waters emphatically took Game One.

Daquarius Thompkins and John Nobles led the EWU charge in the contest each going 4-for-5, while Caden Hutchinson turned in a 3-for-5 effort. Anthony Roman went 3-for-6, Dwanye Maduro and Leonel Garcia went 2-for-four, and Hugo Schoening finished 2-for-6.  Alexander Davila earned the win for the Tigers going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, no earned runs, and struck out one.

(SATURDAY) GAME TWO: Edward Waters 20, Morehouse 2 (7 Inn.):
24 hours later, the Edward Waters offensive onslaught continued in Game Two as the Tigers put up 20 runs on 14 hits. EWU posted five runs in the top of the second inning and another three in the top of the third and two runs apiece in the top of the fourth and fifth inning respectively to take a commanding 12-0 lead. The Tigers then added eight more runs in the top of the seventh, including homers by Payton Shubert and Anthony Roman to make it an eye-opening 20-0 advantage. Morehouse added just two runs in the bottom half of the seventh but far from enough to extend the game as the Tigers took a run-rule victory.

Payton Shubert and Anthony Roman went 3-for-6, while Daiton Pass and Leonel Garcia each went 2-for-2 at the dish. Sebastian Velez turned in a solid performance in victory for the Tigers, going 4.0 innings, allowing just three hits, no earned runs, four walks, and four strikeouts.

(SATURDAY) GAME THREE: Edward Waters 3, Morehouse 0:
The final contest of the series was a low scoring one, but just enough for the Tigers to earn the three-game sweep of Morehouse. John Nobles started the scoring in top half of the fourth with an RBI fielder's choice and Leonel Garcia added a two-RBI single to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead, which was all they needed to take the win.

Dwanye Maduro was lights out for the Tigers on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout. Maduro allowed just four hits and struckout seven Maroon Tigers. At the plate, Daquarius Thompkins led the way going 2-for-3 with a double.

Edward Waters will head back down to St. Augustine for their second meeting with Flagler College on Tuesday, April 25th at 6:00pm at Drysdale Field.
