Baseball Splits Weather Shortened Series At Lane

Jackson, Tennessee-Edward Waters took the longest road trip that an SIAC baseball team could take on Saturday as they began a critical three-game series against Lane College at the Ballpark at Jackson, former home of the Jackson Generals, the former Double-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Tigers dominated Game One, 13-4, but could not complete the doubleheader sweep in Game Two, falling 3-2. The rubber match of the series which was originally scheduled for Sunday was canceled due to rain.

(SATURDAY) GAME ONE: Edward Waters 13, Lane College 5:
The Edward Waters offense was potent and powerful in the opening contest of the series thanks to 16 hits posted. The two squads went back and forth over the first 3.5 innings of the contest before Lane was able to crack the scoreboard first in the bottom half of the fourth inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead. The Purple & Orange were able to respond in the top of the fifth inning when Hugo Schoening hit an RBI double to left field that tied the contest up at 1-1.

The Tigers were able to take their first lead of the contest in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a five run explosion. Dwanye Maduro hit an RBI single, Schoening hit a three-RBI double to left center field, and Leonel Garcia hit an RBI single, giving the visitors a 6-1 lead. EWU padded their advantage in the top of the seventh with two more runs courtesy of a Maduro RBI double and a Payton Shubert RBI single. EWU again put up another five spot in the top of the ninth when Cayden Hutchinson scored on a Dragons error, an RBI single from Shubert, a Leonel Diaz RBI double, and an RBi single from Daquarius Thompkins, giving Edward Waters a commanding 13-1 lead. Lane attempted to cut into the lead in the bottom half of the ninth, scoring three runs, but it was much too late as Edward Waters earned the dominant eight run victory.

Cayden Hutchinson went perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Hugo Schoening finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored, and Payton Shubert turned in a 3-for-6 day with one RBI and two run scored. Alexander Davila took the victory for the Tigers, going a complete game and allowing just two earned runs.

(SATURDAY) GAME TWO: Lane College 5, Edward Waters 3:
Edward Waters started things off with a bang in Game Two, thanks to a towering solo home run from Payton Shubert to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Dragons came back in the bottom of the first to take the lead, posting two runs to lead by one. Dwanye Maduro put the Tigers back in the game in the top of the fourth with an RBI double to tie the contest at 2-2. Lane was able to nudge out front in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to retake the advantage at 3-2 and were able to make it stand up to win the contest.

Sebastian Velez was tagged with the loss in the matchup, going 5.0 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs.

The Tigers will step out of conference in their next contest on Tuesday, April 18th as they head to St. Augustine to matchup with Flagler at 6:00pm.
