Box Score 2 Denmark, South Carolina-Edward Waters began a 10-game road trip on Tuesday afternoon against former Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) rival, Voorhees University in a doubleheader. The Purple and Orange were able to get the job done in dominant fashion, taking Game One, 8-4 and Game Two, 15-5. The Game One victory for the Tigers had extra special significance as it clinched the 300th career victory for 12th year head coach Reginald Johnson II.
GAME ONE: Edward Waters 8, Voorhees 4:
Catcher
Anthony Roman put the Tigers on the board first in the top of the 1st inning with an RBI double to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, EWU would add two more runs thanks to an RBI single from third baseman

Voorhees made things interesting in the bottom of the second, plating two runs to make it a one run contest at 3-2. VU added two more runs in the bottom of the third to take their first lead of the contest at 4-3. Edward Waters would get back on the board and retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Diaz hit a solo homer over the right field wall and right fielder
Dwanye Maduro hit an RBI single to give EWU a 5-4 lead.
The Purple & Orange effectively put the game away in the top of the seventh plating three insurance runs. Maduro hit his second RBI single of the contest and later came home to score on a passed ball. Center fielder
Daquarius Thompkins hit a two-RBI double to close out the scoring to give EWU an 8-4 lead.
Darius Blasingane was able to come in and shut the door on Voorhees in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tigers the Game One victory and Coach Johnson his milestone 300th career win.
Maduro ended up finishing the contest a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman
Gerald Perret earned the victory in relief for Edward Waters, recording two strikeouts in two innings pitched. Fellow freshman
Carson Hurst started the contest going 3.0 innings and recorded two strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Edward Waters 15, Voorhees 5:
The EWU bats woke up in a big way in Game Two as the Tigers recorded 15 runs off of 16 hits in the contest.
Leonel Diaz started things off in the top of the first with an RBi triple, while later
Leonel Garcia and
Daquarius Thompkins each connected on RBI singles and
Kaleb Wilson hit an RBI double to give Edward Waters a 4-0 lead. VU made it a three-run contest in the bottom half of the inning with an RBi sacrifice fly to make it a 4-1 EWU lead.
Leonel Diaz got the Tigers offense started again in the top of the second with his two-RBi single, followed by a Thompkins RBI fielder's choice that padded the EWU lead to 7-1. Voorhees responded in the bottom of the second, scoring on a bases loaded walk to cut the EWU advantage to 7-2. VU later in the bottom of the fourth cut the Tigers lead to four on the strength of an RBI single.Â
Edward Waters got back in gear in the top of the fifth, plating five runs.
Dwanye Maduro's three-RBI triple started things off, followed by RBI singles from
Payton Shubert and Diaz to give the Tigers a commanding 12-3 lead. Voorhees hit the scoreboard again in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly and another bases loaded walk that made it a 12-5 ballgame.
EWU was able to plate two more runs in the top of the sixth with RBI singles from Luis Nunez and
Erickson Matos, then in the top of the seventh, Diaz hit his second homer of the day to close things out at 15-5 and preserve the doubleheader sweep.
Maduro for the second straight contest would lead the Tigers at the plate going 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.
Leonel Garcia and
Leonel Diaz each would go 3-for-5,
Payton Shubert finished 2-for-3, and
Kaleb Wilson finished 2-for-4.
Starter
Will Valenti took the victory for Edward Waters, going 2.0 innings and recording three strikeouts.
Edward Waters will continue their road trip as they will open a three-game series against Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3:00pm.
