Thomasville, Georgia-The EWU baseball squad has had a rough go of it as of late, coming into Tuesday's road contest against Thomas on a three-game losing streak and nine of their last 12 outings. Unfortunately for the defending HBCU National Champs, the losing streak grew to four with a tough 14-2 run rule defat to the Nighthawks in seven innings at Varnadoe Stadium.
Things started off positively for the Purple & Orange (10-12, in the top of the second inning when
Daiton Pass, who made his return to his home state of Georgia, connected on an RBI double that gave Edward Waters a 1-0 lead. That would be the final time the Tigers would have the advantage as things quickly soured for them from that point on. Thomas (12-18) plated five runs in the bottom half of the inning to seize control of the contest at 5-1.
The Nighthawks added a single run in the bottom of the third and another two runs, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, to push the lead to 8-1. Edward Waters was able to pull a run back in the top of the sixth on
Daquarius Thompkins' RBI double, but another big half inning for Thomas put the contest out of reach. In the bottom of the sixth, the Nighthawks scored six runs, including a grand slam to take a commanding 14-2 lead. Edward Waters was unable to cut into lead in the top of the seventh, bringing the contest to an early end due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Edward Waters offense was anemic at best in the contest, only mustering six hits, while allowing 13 to Thomas, including three homers. Thompkins and
Hugo Schoening led the way for the Tigers offensively, each going 2-for-3.
Morris James was tagged with his first loss of the season, going 2.0 innings, allowing five hits, five earned runs, three walks, and one strikeout.
The Tigers will return to SIAC action and continue their road trip on Friday and Saturday in Savannah against Savannah State. A single, nine-inning affair will start the series on Friday at 2:00pm, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00pm.
