Albany, Georgia-Having their three-game SIAC series moved from Jacksonville to Albany due to rain proved to be no problem for Edward Waters as they clinched a key sweep of Albany State. The Purple & Orange took both games of Sunday's doubleheader by 7-2 and 4-3 final scores, then hung on to earn the sweep on Monday winning 2-1. The victories for Edward Waters pushed their winning streak to seven and moved them into sole possession of first place in the SIAC East Division.
(Sunday) Game One: Edward Waters 7, Albany State 2:
The Lady Rams got the scoring started in the series opener, plating a run in the top of the first inning on an Edward Waters error to take a 1-0 lead. Edward Waters responded in-kind in the bottom half of the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice from
Kayla Saunders and
Brooke Rice scoring on an ASU error to give Edward Waters the lead at 2-1. A wild pitch in the bottom of the third brought both Jazmine and
Caitlynne Lamug home, adding to the advantage at 4-1.Â
Laura Scott connected on a two-RBI double in the bottom half of the fourth inning to give EWU a five run lead a 6-1. In the top of the sixth, Albany State brought one run back with an RBI single to make it a 6-2 Edward Waters lead, but the Lady Tigers were up to the task again in the bottom of the sixth on
Kylah Gardner's RBI triple that put the contest away at 7-2.
EWU recorded 10 hits in the contest as a team, with
Laura Scott leading the way going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI's, a run scored, and a stolen base.
Tiara Peters also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double, and a run scored.Â
Starter
Jodasea Peterson earned the win for Edward Waters, going 7.0 innings and striking out six.
(Sunday) Game Two: Edward Waters 4, Albany State 3:
ASU again scored first in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Tigers fired back in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, plating four runs.
Caitlynne Lamug got the EWU hit parade started with an RBI single,
Jade Mention connected on an RBI single,
Jazmine Lamug scored on a wild pitch, and Mention later came around to score on an ASU error to give EWU a 4-1 lead.Â
Albany Stated added single runs in the bottom of the second and fourth innings, but could get no closer as EWU took the doubleheader and clinched the series.
Jade Mention finished the contest for EWU, going 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI, a double, and a run scored.
Shai-Ann Currie took the win for the Lady Tigers in the circle, going 5.1 innings.
(Monday) Edward Waters 2, Albany State 1:
Monday's low scoring affair went scoreless up until the top of the sixth inning when Albany State hit an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Edward Waters was able to respond in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Kylah Gardner hit an RBI double to tie the contest at 1-1, then
Brooke Rice clinched the sweep with a walkoff RBI single that scored Gardner and gave the Lady Tigers a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Gardner finished her afternoon going 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored to lead the way for Edward Waters.
Alyssa Charter-Smith started the contest for Edward Waters, going 5.2 innings, and recording six strikeouts to record a no-decision.
Jodasea Peterson earned the win in relief for Edward Waters going 1.1 innings and allowing just one hit.
The Lady Tigers will continue their road trip in Columbia, South Carolina for a three-game series against Allen University. A doubleheader will start things on Saturday, followed by a single contest on Sunday.
